In at the Corner - Powergen South West One

Chinnor 30 (Tries: Tolich, Brown, Williams. Cons: Hewitt 3. Pens: Hewitt 3.).

Maidenhead 13 (Try: Cripps. Con: Walton. Pens: Walton. .).

Maidenhead won the toss and elected to play with the strong breeze at their backs. However it was all Chinnor in the first 10 minutes as they laid siege to the Maidenhead line. Strong defence kept them at bay, and when Chinnor elected to go for goal and narrowly missed, Maidenhead went on the offensive. With their line-out functioning particularly well, and their back row getting to the break down at speed they were looking dangerous. Dan Walton kicked a penalty for a Chinnor off-side in the 12th minute and repeated the dose just 4 minutes later for a similar infringement A Simon Cripps try following a decisive break by Jonny Hammond, converted by Walton put Maidenhead in the ascendancy with still 20 minutes of the first half remaining. The Chinnor defence stood firm during this period, assisted somewhat by some strange option taking by the visitors.

The first 10 minutes of the second half gave no indication of what was to come. Both sides went close to scoring before James Hewitt stepped up to claw 3 points back for a Maidenhead off-side. Chinnor were now on the front foot, but remained patient A searing break through the middle by Rewi Tolich saw him hand on to Eric Brown who ran in under the posts. With the Hewitt conversion a formality, and the same player adding a penalty just 8 minutes later, it was now game on. With John Brodley ringing the changes it was substitute Richard Williams next on the score sheet when he rounded off a move he had started to again go over under the posts. Hewitt added the extra points and minutes later struck an excellent penalty to  put clear water between the sides. An Eric Brown try from a forward drive with a Hewitt conversion from the touchline, which made it six successful kicks out of seven for the youngster, was the icing on the cake for the home side. Chinnor had scored 30 unanswered points in the last remarkable quarter of the game.

Basingstoke 16 (Try: Buckland. Con: Humberstone. Pens: Humberstone 3.).

Weston super Mare 10 (Try: Richards. Con: Reid. Pen: Reid.).

Weston went in front in the 8th minute when James Reid put over a penalty goal.

The home side were level eight minutes later with Simon Humberstone putting over a penalty goal. They led 10-3 by half time with a try from centre Simon Buckland which Humberstone converted.  .

Eight minutes into the second half and Humberstone stretched the lead with a second penalty goal.

Weston were right back in it on 52 minutes when second row Andy Richards went over and Reid converted to make it a three point game.

Humberstone kicked a third penalty goal on the hour to give the home side a six point lead which they held till the end as they join Weston on 31 points but remain fourth with the visitors having a better points difference. .

Chippenham 20 (Tries: Surry, Boddington, Squires. Con: Williamson. Pen: Williamson.).

Reading Abbey 10 (Tries: .Kindon, Willis.).

Report courtesy of Reading Abbey:

Abbey and Chippenham are old and friendly rivals having been together in South West 2 East for several years and then promoted together this season. The Rosehill men had won every one of their last five encounters but it was a poor first-half performance that cost them the league points in their away Powergen South West One league match last Saturday. The cold cross-field breeze and a bone hard pitch made it a day for judicious kicking but in the early stages of the game the visitors repeatedly failed to clear long so that Chippenham were given repeated chances to run at the Abbey line.

After six minutes a short clearance gave Chippenham their first opportunity. They were held up but from the scrum their Number 8 John Boddington went over on the blind and soon afterwards a charged-down clearance led to the visitors handling in the ruck and scrum-half Andy Williamson slotted the penalty.

Abbey’s first attack came after a quarter of an hour as centre Charlie Hanman handed off three tackles only for the move to end with a penalty in the home 22 awarded for non-release. Chippenham again brought play forward but their tactics too were all wrong as for twenty minutes they took on the tough Abbey pack who defended like tigers and steadily got on top in scrum and in line-out where locks Tony Potts and Dan Pawlett both made vital steals. There was a cost in this in that late in the half scrum-half Gareth Priest and prop/coach Jerry Shedden were both consigned to the bin for their side’s repeated offences. Abbey were still failing to clear long but even against 13 men Chippenham were finding it impossible to score until eventually three minutes into stoppage time they put the ball along the line and flanker Gary Squires crossed for a try converted by scrum-half Andy Williamson.

During the break Shedden read the riot act to his side who were rather fortunate to be only 15 points down and they responded well for they were on the board in less than two minutes. Their first convincing move of the game saw full-back Glenn Hunt make 25 metres and pass to winger Kevin Mullen who nearly crossed but was stopped by defenders diving into the ruck. Flanker Steve Willis quickly tapped the penalty and no one could stop him crashing over for a try.

Helped by more wayward Abbey kicking, Chip came back and despite a terrific tackle by Mullen they went further ahead in the 55th minute when winger Paul Surry crossed on the blind.

After that it was mainly Abbey with Chippenham conceding a string of penalties that maybe should have had a man in the bin. But despite being under constant pressure in the scrum they were clearing well and it took until the 70th minute before Potts made ground and skipper James Kindon popped up on the blind for a try that reduced the lead to ten points. Kindon then showed his versatility with two huge clearances but Chippenham steadied themselves and ran out winners in a game that was notable for its sportsmanship and for some sound refereeing. Dino Maddern, incidentally, was the same official, who had awarded Abbey a match-winning penalty try deep in injury time that had given them the league points when Chippenham visited Rosehill in December last.

Clifton 18 (Tries: S Kent, Lloyd. Con: Barnes. Pens: Barnes, S Kent.).

Cheltenham 18 (Tries: Williams. Con: Crisp. Pens: Crisp 2.).

Despite drawing with already relegated Cheltenham Clifton confirm second place in South West One and earn a play off match against London One runners up Richmond.

Mike Crisp gave Cheltenham the lead with a penalty goal in the 12th minute but the lead only last five minutes. Back came Clifton with John Barnes putting over a penalty goal and when he converted a try from left wing Sam Kent on the half hour mark Clifton were 10-3 ahead. Cheltenham were level by half time with second row Kristian Williams touching down and Crisp converted.

In the second half the visitors went back in front when Williams got a second try and with Crisp also slotting over a second penalty goal they led 18-10 after 54 minutes.

Clifton got back within a score when Sam Kent taking over the kicking from the injured John Barnes put over a 76th minute penalty goal.

They snatched a draw on 80 minutes when right wing Ali Lloyd went over for a try which Kent could not convert to sneak the win.

Oxford Harlequins 34 (Tries: .Noyce, Henley, Soper, Chapman 2. Cons: Cottenden 3. Pen: Cottenden.).

Penryn 15 (Tries:  Mann, Hocking, Hughes.).

Much needed win for Oxford Harlequins who move onto 14 points, two more than Penryn who they were level with at the start of the day.

Replacement prop Tom Chapman helped himself to a double after coming on for Simon Chadbone.
