Hull Ionians 18 (Tries: Cawthorn, Eves. Con: Boyd. Pens: Boyd 2).
Macclesfield 13 (Try: Coulbeck. Con: Winney. Pens: Winney 2).
In spite of losing by 18-13 at Hull Ionians, the bonus point gained by Macclesfield, in losing by less than seven points means that Leicester Lions will finish in the bottom three having completed all their fixtures.
However, this was a game that ought to have been won, with the second half being played almost entirely in Ionians territory. Opportunities were created, but the Blues failed to make full use of them.
Player coach Dave Muckalt was disappointed but was quick to praise the team on their discipline, particularly in the face of some provocative refereeing, and said: “Although we missed a number of chances, the team kept their heads and discipline and denied possession to the home team throughout the entire second half. It was a pity that we did not capitalise on our superiority during that period when Hull failed to add to their score.”
Macc began well and almost crossed the line in the first couple of minutes, being prevented from doing so by an illegal ploy, but from the resulting penalty, Ross Winney kicked the goal. However the lead was short lived, when some good attacking by Hull and some casual defence from the Blues, saw centre Mike Cawthorn cross the line and Glen Boyd converted to put them in front. Then, with further pressure and a kick to the corner to set up a catch and drive situation, the Ionians pack drove over with number eight Derek Eves claiming the try.
Macc reorganised themselves and clawed their way back, putting the home side under a good deal of pressure, and when full back Ben Coulbeck came into the line and took a miss pass, he was able to cut through the defence to score the Blues’ first try which Winney converted to close the gap to two points.
The final ten minutes of the half saw the pendulum swing once again towards the home side with two more Boyd penalty successes, and a sin binning for Macc centre Tony Howcroft. Pete Allen was soon to replace Alex Donaldson at hooker, but Macc were unable to break Hull’s resilience. However, Ionians were struggling to escape from their own half, then after forty nine minutes a Winney penalty kick struck the upright, before he succeeded with another attempt on sixty nine minutes. James Boothroyd and Coulbeck were stopped from scoring by some last ditch tackling, and even replacement with fresh legs failed to relieve the pressure on Ionians. But, try as they might, the Blues were unable to snatch victory. |
