In at the Corner - National Two

Moseley 43 (Tries: Bressington 3, Colvin 2, O’Leary, Rodwell. Cons: McDonald 4.).

Launceston 12 (Tries: Dibble, John. Con: John.).

Mosley clinched the National Two title on Saturday with this win at home to Launceston as Waterloo failed to pick up a four try bonus point at Redruth.

It took them 18 minutes to break the deadlock before left wing Carl Colvin went over and Greg McDonald converted.

Marc Dibble responded for the visitors three minutes later when he went over for an unconverted try. Two tries either side of half time from wing Nathan Bressington saw the home side take control and go into a 21-5 lead with McDonald converting them both.

They got another just before the break when No 8 James Rodwell touched down and again McDonald converted.

In the third quarter Colvin completed his double and Bressington his hat trick as they extended their lead to 38-5.

Launceston did manage another try with scrum half Richard John going over and adding the conversion.

The home side did have the final score when centre Daren O’Leary went over in the 78th minute to round off the win.

Redruth 12 (Tries: Gidlow, Churcher. Con: Donald.).

Waterloo 21 (Tries: Payne, Van Deventer, Payne. Pens: Nutt 2.).

Waterloo picked up the win but failed to get the bonus point and so cannot catch Moseley at the top of the table.

They were ahead in seven minutes when centre Freeman Payne went over for an unconverted try. Five minutes later though the home side were in front after a try from centre PJ Gidlow and Gavin Donald added the conversion to make it 7-5.

Full back Steven Nutt put over a 26th minute penalty goal as the visitors led 8-7 at the break.

10 minutes into the second half and Waterloo got a second try as left wing Jay Van Deventer went over for a try and a 13-7 lead.

They got a third try seven minutes later when Payne completed a double but again the conversion was missed.

Redruth got back into the game in the 71st minute when full back Marek Churcher went over they were back within six of the visitors.

Waterloo sealed the win on 78 minutes when Nutt put over a penalty goal but they failed to get the all important fourth try.

Halifax 16 (Try: Afoa Peterson. Con: Canning. Pens: Canning 3.).

Manchester 32 (Tries: Hannah, Martin, Wood, McKenzie. Cons: Wilson 3. Pens: Wilson 2.).

They took the lead with a 2nd minute Andre Wilson penalty goal and four minutes later led 10-0 after full back Sean Hannah touched down and Wilson converted.

Aaron Canning got the home side of the mark with a penalty goal but Wilson cancelled that out for Manchester and then they got a second try from flanker Gareth Martin and Wilson converted. Canning pulled three points back in injury time at the end of the half.

In the second half Halifax got right back into the match No 8 Robert Afoa Peterson going over for minutes into the half Canning converted and put over a 52 minute penalty goal to make it a four point game, 20-16.

The visitors did not seal the win till the 77th minute when Bressington put over a penalty goal.

Esher 29 (Tries: Moore 2, Cormack 2. Cons: Hallett 3. Pen: Hallett.).

Barking 13 (Try: Rokobaro. Con: Pilat. Pens: Pilat 2.).

At the start of the season, Esher would have bitten your hand off if they had been offered a third place finish in a league that can be at times unpredictable. Saturday’s well-deserved victory over Barking has now guaranteed the Surrey Side third place.

Esher were seeking revenge over a 17 – 15 defeat earlier in the season at Barking, a defeat that began to a poor run of games for Esher who at the time were riding high.

On Saturday Barking took the lead after only 2 minutes through the boot of Corrado Pilat, one off the many non-English players that the East London side consist off. The score became 3 all on 7minutes when Esher’s Neil Hallett slotted over his penalty kick. Esher then began to display some form that had been missing in the past weeks and a scorching run by Matt Moore the leagues highest try scorer by a long way went in for his 23rd try of the season, Hallett added the extra two and Esher took the lead 8 points to 3. On 23 minutes some respite for Barking as Pilat added a three-point penalty as some reward for having defended stoutly against a fired up Esher.

On the stroke off half time, Esher felt they had scored a good try under the posts, the touch judge agreed but referee Mr Turnill felt otherwise and ordered a 5 metre attacking scrum. From the scrum and eventual line out, Esher showed that they are still masters of the rolling maul and as they charged forward at an unstoppable pace, skipper Duncan Cormack popped up with the ball in hand to claim the try. At half time Esher looked in control and led 15 points to 6.

The second period began as it ended with Esher in control, and another rolling maul on 49 minutes saw Cormack celebrating his brace of tries, Hallett adding the extra two points to extend their lead to 22 points to 6. On 64 minutes Esher looked as if they would be scoring their bonus point try as flanker Jack Davison made a superb break down field, with the try line in sight, he was tackled by the chasing Barking defenders, the visitors turned the ball over and broke away themselves and ended up scoring a try through number 8 S Rokobaro, the conversion by Pilat bought the score back to 22 – 13. Esher rang the changes and took off debutant Will Maddox who had a good game on the wing, Ever present Mark Butterworth who had been once again a stalwart in the Esher side all season, and Simon Elkinson the Esher hooker.

With the game edging towards the close, Matt Moore had the last word as he scored his second try of the game, and surely sealing the league’s top try scorer slot. Hallett converted and Esher ran out worthy victors 29 points to 13.
