In at the Corner - National Three North

Blaydon 52 (Tries: Penalty try (17), Fenby (20), Smith (32), Segi (44), Vinnicombe (56), Kyle (78). Cons: Windle 5. Pens: Windle 4 (2, 10, 40, 46).

Darlington Mowden Park 24 (Tries: Connolly 2 (5, 80), Foreman (41). Cons: Mellalieu 2. Pen: Mellalieu (30).

Blaydon sit in fourth place after this comfortable home win over North East rivals Darlington Mowden Park at Crow Trees as DMP slip to their second away loss of the season.

Comprehensive win for Blaydon running in six tries and fly half Richard Windle had a fine game with the boot converting five of the six tries and slotted over all four of his penalty attempts.

The home side were 28-10 ahead at the break after tries from wing Andrew Fenby and full back Ralph Smith, along with a penalty try, Windle converted two of the tries and slotted over four three goals. For DMP centre Jamie Connolly went over for a try and Anthony Mellalieu converted and put over a penalty goal.

The visitors got the opening score of the second half as scrum half Andrew Foreman touched down and Mellalieu converted but by the hour mark the home side were 45-17 ahead after tries from flanker Patrick Segi and No 8 Paul Vinnicombe, Windle converted both and put over his fourth penalty goal of the match.

Both sides scored a try in the final minutes as Blaydon took the five points on offer.

Darlington 24 (Tries: S Richardson (21), Palmer (72), Rayner (78). Pens: Rayner 3 (10, 29, 64).

Preston Grasshoppers 27 (Tries: Hughes (2), Robey (18), Bailey (58), Wilson (68). Cons: Bailey 2. Pen: Bailey (48).

Hoppers make it three wins out of three with this excellent away win at Darlington who lose at home for the second time this season.

Preston were first on the scoreboard with a 2nd minute try from right wing William Hughes and Paul Bailey converted for 7-0. Charlie Rayner, on his Darlington debut, slotted over three points for the home side in the 10th minute. But it was Hoppers who got the next score to move 12-3 ahead as flanker Mark Robey went over for an unconverted try. Three minutes later and Darlington got their first try of the afternoon with scrum half Shaun Richardson touching down, Rayner missed the conversion but did add a penalty goal just before the half hour mark and they went in at half time just a point behind 12-11.

Bailey extended the visitors lead with a penalty goal in the 48th minute but just before the hour mark Bailey went over for a try and Hoppers were 20-11 ahead going into the final quarter.

Rayner pulled three points back for the home side but the visitors got a third try on 68 minutes when scrum half Darren Wilson touched down and Bailey converted for 27-14 and the four try bonus point secured.

Darlington were not finished and scored tries in the final ten minutes through lock Stewart Palmer and Rayner but it was not enough and Hoppers took the win to remain in second spot in the table.

Fylde 14 (Try: Wiseman (14). Pens: Armstrong 3 (9, 53, 74).

Tynedale 14 (Tries: S Johnson (27), Massey (40). Cons: Massey 2.).

All square at Woodlands with the game ending in bizarre fashion.

Fylde took the lead in this match when fly half John Armstrong slotted over a 9th minute penalty goal. They went 8-0 ahead when left wing Dave Wiseman went in for the games opening try but Armstrong failed to convert.

Tynedale were on the scoreboard when flanker Stuart Johnson went over for a try on 26 minutes and Will Massey converted. With half time approaching the visitors went in front when Massey touched down and again converted to make it 14-8.

13 minutes into the second half and Armstrong narrow the gap to three points with a second penalty goal. He levelled the scores on 74 minutes with his third penalty goal.

Tynedale were awarded a penalty in what was the final play of the match, Massey thought his side was in front so decided to take the penalty attempt but put it wide of the post and make sure it went out of play and dead.

Let’s hope they don’t miss out on promotion by a couple of points at the end of the season.

Leicester Lions 23 (Tries: Hill (41), Barrett (46) Con: Mitchell. Pens: Mitchell 3 (57, 77, 80)

Orrell 13 (Tries: Ligaira Badham (32), Hignett (65). Pen: Brand (54).

Leicester Lions made it two out of two at Westleigh Park as Orrell go down to a third successive defeat.

Orrell did a bit better this week after two heavy defeats and did not help their cause with four players spending time in the sin bin.

In fact the visitors were in front at half time with a try from centre Dan Ligaira Badham as they went in 5-0 in front after the opening 40 minutes.

It took the Lions just a minute into the second half to take the lead with centre Joe Hill touching down and Allan Mitchell converting.

Five minutes later they were further ahead after prop Keni Barrett touched down for 12-5. Chris Brand pulled three points back for Orrell with a 54th minute penalty goal. Just before the hour mark Mitchell put over a penalty goal for the Lions but Orrell made it a two point game soon after as replacement Christian Hignett touched down for an unconverted try.

Mitchell made the game safe for the Lions with penalty goals in the 77th and 80th minutes but it was a close shave and Orrell played a lot better than in their first two games of the season.

.

Macclesfield 22 (Tries: Bartle (46), Allen (65). Pens: Winney 3 (3, 12, 26). DG: Macey (58).

Cleckheaton 18 (Tries: Bentley (9), Duckett (37), Quinn (79).Pen: Quinn (29).

Macclesfield lie in third place after this narrow home win over Cleckheaton.

Ross Winney gave the home side the lead in the 3rd minute with a penalty goal. Back came Cleckheaton with right wing John Bentley going over for a try and a 5-3 lead on nine minutes.

Winney slotted over penalties in the 12th and 26th minutes to lead 9-5. Chris Quinn replied with a penalty goal for the visitors to get them back within a point. They took the lead again late in the half with full back Ryan Duckett going over for a try but again in went unconverted but they did lead 13-9 at the break.

Six minutes into the second half centre Paul Bartle went over the Cleckheaton line and they were 14-13 ahead. Phil Macey extended their lead with a 58th minute drop goal. When hooker Peter Allen went over for a try the home side were 22-13 ahead and two scores ahead.

With time running out Quinn went over for a try and got the visitors into bonus point territory but they will be disappointed at out scoring the home side three tries too two and not making the most of it.

Morley 19 (Tries: Rika (17), Field (25), Wade (67). Cons: Boyd 2.

Hull Ionians 13 (Try: Cawthorn (79). Con: Moorhouse. Pens:  Moorhouse 2 (36, 40).

Morley continue to top the table after this home win over Hull Ionians who slip to their third successive defeat.

The home side went ahead when lock Craig Rika went over for a try and a 7-0 lead with Glen Boyd converted. It was 12-0 on 25 minutes when flanker Craig Field touched down but before half time Ionians full Mack Richard Moorhouse pulled six points back for his side with a couple of penalty goals.

It took till the 67th minute for the next score as replacement back row forward Ben Wade went over and Boyd added the extras.

Hull finally managed to cross the home line when centre Mike Cawthorn went over and Moorhouse converted to give them their second losing bonus point of the season.

West Park St Helens 34 (Tries: Briers (29), Westhead (68), Turner (73), Lawrenson (80). Cons: Soutar 4. Pens: Soutar 2 (6, 70).

Rugby Lions 25 (Tries: Wareing (40), Jackson (49), Barclay 63). Cons: Hawken 2. Pens: Hawken 2 (38, 47).

West Park St Helens pick up their first win of the season as Rugby Lions slip to their first defeat of the season.

West Park were of the mark in the 6th minute when Andrew Soutar put over a 6th minute penalty goal but it was till till the 29th minute that they increased their lead with centre Stephen Briers going over and Soutar converted to make it 10-0.

The visitors though responded with a penalty goal form James Hawken and were right back in it in injury time when right wing Dominic Wareing going over to make it 10-8 at half time.

After the break Rugby continued where they left off at the end of the first half with Hawken putting over a second penalty goal and then replacement centre David Jackson and flanker Will Barclay touching down and with Hawken converting both they were 25-10 ahead and looking at a third consecutive win.

West Park though had other ideas and a try from lock David Westhead converted by Soutar got them within eight points and still 12 minutes of normal play left.

Soutar got them within a score with a penalty goal two minutes later and just three minutes later they were in front, they got a try through right wing Mark Turner and Soutar converted to put them two points in front

They did not seal the win till five minutes into injury time when replacement back Thomas Lawrenson went over for the fourth try and Soutar converted as Park took all five points and deprived the Lions of a losing bonus point.
