In at the Corner - South West One

Chippenham 31 (Tries: Crockett 2, McMillan, Alford, Price. Cons: Simmons 3.).

Clevedon 5 (Try: Russell.)

Huge win for Chippenham who now find themselves four points clear of the relegation zone with four matches remaining.

It took the home side 22 minutes to break down the visitors defence before centre Rupert Crockett went over and fly half Scott Simmons added the conversion. Six minutes later and scrum half Sam Alford went over for a second Chippenham try and Simmons made it 14-0 with the conversion. Six minutes later Crockett completed a double and the home side were 19-0 ahead.

Left wing Darren McMillan went over before half time with Chippenham in total control at 24-0.

Clevedon did manage the opening try of the second half with a touchdown from flanker Harvey Russell.

Two minutes later and Chippenham were over for a fifth try with second row Adie Price going over and Simmons back on target with the conversion.

Cleve 69(Tries: Ajuma, Setherton 3, Hill, Pritchard, Martens 2, Gully 2, Penalty try. Cons: Cozens 7.).

Basingstoke 20 (Tries: Lambert, Rogers. Cons: Goodall, Humberstone. Pens: Goodall.)

CLEVE remain on course for a place in the end of season play-offs against the second placed side from London One to decide who gets promoted to Division Three South for next season.

With four matches remaining, including home ties against leaders Mounts Bay and third placed St Ives, it could mean promotion for the second successive season for the buoyant Mangostfield based club.

Centre Greg Setherton claimed a hat-trick of tries with former Bristol players Hentie Martens and flanker Simon Gully getting two a piece, though Gully was carded for the second week in a row, and fly-half Luke Cozens landing seven of this eleven conversion attempts.

But again Cleve started slowly going behind to an early try from wing Ollie Rogers converted by full back Mike Goodall. But by the midway point of the first half Gully had crossed twice plus a try each from wing Jon Pritchard and centre Scott Hill.

Basingstoke came back with Goodall adding a penalty either side of a try from Cleve wing Dan Ajuwa. The visitors had flanker Gareth Patterson carded before Cleve were awarded a penalty try for 36-13 interval lead.

The visitors had a second player sent to the sin bin just before the half time break and Cleve capitalised of this. Two tries each from Setherton and Martens saw Cleve stretch their lead to 62-13 by the hour mark.

Gully was sent to the sin bin before wing Dave Lambert went over for Basingstoke’s second try, converted by fly-half Simon Humberstone. Setherton completed his hat-tick with Cozens converting for 14 points from the game.

Maidenhead 27 (Try: ).

Bracknell 5 (Try:. )

Maidenhead move up to fourth place after this home win over a Bracknell side who really needed a win to try and keep their survival hopes alive.

Oxford Harlequins 22 (Tries: Soper 2, Henley. Cons: Davies 2. Pen: Davies.).

St Ives 15 (Tries: Baignent, Taylor.) Con: Martin. Pen: Martin.

Oxford Harlequins put paid to any realistic hopes St Ives had of catching second placed Cleve with this home win over them.

Peter Davies gave the home side a 3-0 lead on ten minutes with a penalty goal. 11 minutes later they went 10-0 ahead with No 8 Paddy Soper touching down for the games opening try and Davies added the extras.

By half time though it was all square with centre Aaron Baignent going over for a try wing Karl Martin converted and put over a penalty goal late in the half.

St Ives went ahead on 50 minutes when left wing Lee Taylor went over and it was 15-10. Soper completed a double on 67 minutes to level up the match before in the 77th minute the home side got the winning score. It came form centre Andy Henley and Davies added the extras to seal the win.

Reading Abbey 5 (Try: Hulland.).

Reading 39 (Tries: Davies 2, Simmons, Niubasaga, Dyson. Cons: Cathcart 4. Pens: Cathcart 2.)

Reading moved into fifth place after this away win at local rivals Reading Abbey.

Abbey were comprehensively defeated in this South West One local derby at Rosehill last Saturday. Already doomed to relegation it took the home side until the final quarter before gaining any confidence and mounting any sustained attacks, their only reward coming from a nicely constructed consolation try starting from a break through the centre from full back Tom Waterhouse and touched down by Number 8 Matt Hulland.

But the damage had been done before that. Winning the toss, Abbey took the breeze but failed to use it. In consequence, they spent too much of the first half in their own territory, short clearances putting the visitors on the front foot and, although strong defence prevented any early tries, the second quarter brought them three, flanker Matt Davies touching down from a rolling maul, scrum-half Simon Dyson benefiting from a pushover and full-back Phil Simmons scoring from a sweeping move.

Reading stand-off James Cathcart, who had converted two of the first-half tries and a penalty, showed how to play with the wind with two huge garryowens so that Abbey had to launch all of their attacks from deep. Although Davies took his second try immediately after the break, to their credit the home side never gave up and gradually began to gain in confidence and discipline which had been poor before the break. Flanker Ben Finnie was doing well in the line-out and substitute Martin Underwood was making holes in the centre. While they were unable to stop a fine move that ended with a 64th minute try for centre Seru Niubasaga, almost immediately they came back for Hulland to record Abbey’s only points of the day. Cathcart, who had converted both of his side’s second half tries, closed the scoring with a late penalty goal.

Weston super Mare 12 (Tries: Armstrong, Sparks. Con: Armstrong.

Mounts Bay 21 (Tries: Edyvean, Jarvis. Con: Larkin. Pens: Jarvis, Larkin 2.)

Mounts Bay maintained their three point lead at the top of the South West One League with this away win over Weston super Mare.   It was two tries apiece but the visitors took it with three penalty goals.

Bay were ahead on 10 minutes with a try from Lee Jarvis, he missed the conversion but put over a 20th minute penalty goal on 20 minutes to make it 8-0.

With Jarvis off the field full back Stephen Larkin took over the kicking and slotted over a penalty goal five minutes later. Bay continued their bright start with a second try on the half hour mark with right wing Tom Edyvean touching down and Larkin converted to make it 18-0. In the last few minutes of the half the home side got a lifeline with No 8 George Sparks going over for an unconverted try.

Larkin put over a second penalty goal five minutes into the second half to extend Bays lead to 21-5.

On the hour mark Weston got a second try with fly half Mark Armstrong going over and putting over the conversion, that was the end of the scoring and Bay picked up the points.
