Report courtesy of Esher:

Esher are within 5 points of making history following a hard fought victory over Nuneaton on Saturday. Esher were forced to make some late changes to their starting line up as injuries begin to mount up. Esher gave debuts to Ruben Aiono at inside centre, Richard Thorpe at open side flanker and a first start at scrum half to Ian Barnes. On the bench they brought in Ed Rosa as replacement hooker for his first call up to the 1st XV squad. The disruption was felt early on as Nuneaton put Esher to the sword and went in front after 6 minutes through a Jody Peacock try and a Gareth Cull conversion, this after Esher had two opportunities to score of their own. Esher pulled 3 points back through the boot of Neil Hallett on 8 minutes.

Esher were being forced into errors and conceded penalties on 10 and 15 minutes which Cull slotted over the posts to give the home side, whose record at Liberty Way is a good one, a ten point lead. With the score at 13- 3 to the home side, Esher had some luck as Aiono caught a stray pass and sprinted unchallenged  to score under the posts, Hallett converted and the Esher were back in the game (13-10). Nuneaton were full of fight and their back line and powerful forward unit was of such power that they should not see their side in the bottom 4 places in the league. With half time 4 minutes away Esher were on the back foot once again and on 36 minutes Cull converted another long range penalty. It was the same story on 40 minutes when Emmanuel Amapakabo was penalised for a head butt and received a yellow card. From the penalty Cull gained another 3 points. The half time score saw Esher trail 19-10.

Down to 14 men for the opening of the second half, Esher began with a try after only one minute of the half. From the kick off Esher went full out at the Nuns and forced them back onto their own line. From the maul Simon Goldsmith, in for a rare start at hooker, secured the ball to score, Hallett converted and Esher trailed by two. Nuneaton struck back within 5 minutes in what was to be a rare entry into Esher territory. On 46 minutes Peacock again received the ball from a short pass out on the Esher right to score, Cull who is in the Hallett league for kicking converted and once again The Nuns, extended their lead to 9 points. Esher then went up through the gears and began to dominate in possession and territory. On 57 minutes Hallett gained a penalty (26-20). Ladislav Vondrasek who had replaced Amapakabo then scored a vital try for Esher as he powered his way over the home sides' line, Hallett converted and Esher took the lead for the first time in the game. Minutes later they secured a bonus points as Richard Briggs wrestled with his opponent to get the ball, which he did, and score. With the kick out wide right, Hallett judged it to perfection and gained a vital 2 points. Esher now led 34-26.

Nuneaton were desperate for at least one point which would guarantee them survival, on 79 minutes Cull gained 3 points from a penalty to close the gap to five points. The clock ticked down and Nuneaton kicked the ball into touch. Both sides achieved what they had set out to do.
