In at the Corner - South West One

Bracknell 32 (Tries:  Budge, Vernon, Edwards, Sparks, Sheasby. Cons: Nowak 2. Pen: Nowak.

Reading 20 (Tries: Carey, Penalty try. Cons: Cathcart 2. Pens: Cathcart 2.

Bracknell got the win they needed to avoid relegation and cap a good second half of the season which saw them improve from what looked like a no way back position and relegation almost guaranteed.

They were ahead after five minutes with left wing Sam Edwards going over and Ben Nowak converting. Player coach Chris Sheasby got the second try on nine minutes and Bracknell were 12-0 ahead. On 22 minutes the visitors were awarded a penalty try and James Cathcart converted. Just before the break Bracknell got a third try as right wing Jamie Vernon went over and they led 17-7.

In the third quarter Cathcart put over a couple of penalty goals for Reading and Nowak slotted one over for the home side who were 20-13 ahead going into the final quarter.

They went further ahead on 68 minutes when flanker Graham Sparks went over and Nowak converted to give them some breathing space at 27-13. Reading got back to within a score when flanker David Carey went over on 75 minutes and Cathcart converted.

Bracknell were safe after full back David Budge touched down and they went 12 points clear and South West One rugby was guaranteed for another season. .

Basingstoke 44 (Tries: Buttle 2, Saunders, Rutherford, Humberstone, R Northcote. Cons: Goodall 4. Pens: Goodall 2.

St Ives 9 (Pens: Martin 3.

Basingstoke finished off a mixed season with a comfortable home win over St Ives out scoring them six tries to nil.

The home side were ahead after just a minute with left wing Karl Buttle touching down and Mike Goodall added the extras. On eight minutes Goodall made it 10-0 with a penalty goal. St Ives fly half Karl Martin then got the visitors back into the match with three penalty goals in 15 minutes but a second Buttle try was enough for the home side to go in 15-9 ahead at the break.

The second half scoring was all Basingstoke as they ran in four more tries. The other wing Carl Saunders got the first on 42 minutes and with fly half Simon Humberstone getting the fourth home try on 52 minutes they were 29-9 ahead and out of sight with Goodall converting them both.

Goodall kicked a second penalty goal before tries from centre Myles Rutherford and flanker Robbie Northcote rounded off the win.

Maidenhead 64 (Tries: Mackay 3, Willcocks 2, Gallina, Parkhouse, Lowden, Swadling. Cons: Mackay 7.

Cleve 6 (Pens: Johnson 2.

Clevedon will playing South West Two West rugby next season after suffering another comprehensive defeat, their 20th of the season, at the hands of third placed Maidenhead who ran in nine tries with left wing Stuart Mackay taking 29 points in the game with a hat-trick of tries and also adding seven conversions

The visitors departure was delayed due to a police incident in the area and when they arrived at Braywick Park three players failed late fitness tests so three forwards played among the backs. Clevedon's only points of the game came through a penalty in each half from scrum half Steve Johnson.

Both sides had a player yellow carded - Clevedon hooker Ben Littleton and Maidenhead lock Mark Mueller - the home side also scoring through two tries from centre Max Willcocks as well as  one each from flankers Alex Gallina and Mark Parkhouse plus replacements Will Lowden and Simon Swalding

Oxford Harlequins 22 (Tries:  .

Chippenham 25 (Tries: Alford, Livesey, Whiteman, Kirby. Con: Simmons. Pen: Simmons.

Despite winning at Oxford Harlequins Chippenham were relegated on points difference after finishing level on points with both Oxford Harlequins and Bracknell. They went into the match knowing they had to win by 13 points to move above Quins in the table.

By half time it was 15 all.

Early in the second half Quins went 22-15 ahead and Chippenham were left with a mountain to climb.

Hooker Jon Whiteman got them back in the game with an unconverted try but they were two points down and needed a 15 point turnaround at this time. Inside the final ten minutes scrum half Sam Alford went over and Scott Simmons converted to give them the lead but they were still two scores short and although they won Oxford Stayed up and Chippenham went down with Bracknell winning at home to Reading.

Reading Abbey 27 (Tries:  Finnie, Willis, Waterhouse, Green. Cons: Waterhouse 2. Pen: Waterhouse.

Weston super Mare 45 (Tries: Madamombe 3, Denbee, Armstrong, Sprague, Ember. Cons: Armstrong 5.

Weston came to Rosehill last Saturday expecting an easy ride but they had to wait until the fourth quarter before consolidating their lead as their superior fitness saw them through to a convincing South West One win.

It has been a miserable season for Abbey, struggling to find players and ending at the bottom of the table but this time the side did them credit with their best half of rugby of the season showing plenty of spirit as strong forward play enabled half backs Alan Edington and Jim Dye to pressurise the opposition with good options. Full-back Tom Waterhouse was first on the board with a second minute penalty but the visitors’ dangerous centre TJ Madamombe soon carved through the middle to touch down for a try converted by fly-half Mark Armstrong.

Abbey swept back and flanker Ben Finnie capped his excellent work in the line-out with a try in the corner. Weston took the lead with a copy-book try touched down by flanker Mike Denbee, Armstrong converting but on the half hour a green shirt burst from a maul to swerve, dummy, hand off and cross for a storming try. Yes, it was former twice promotion skipper Number 8 Steve Willis, 37 years young and possibly in his last full season but still loving his rugby. Waterhouse converted and the home side went into the break with a one-point advantage.

Eight minutes after the re-start Madabombe took his second try and Armstrong converted but at the end of the third quarter Waterhouse broke through for a try converted by himself to restore Abbey’s single-point lead. But lack of fitness, which has been so often the downfall of Abbey this season, began to show. Madabombe took his hat-trick with an individual try assisted by some poor tackling and Abbey’s direction and discipline began to go. Two home players and one visitor were binned and Armstrong finished off a simple move with a 70th minute try. The Weston lead was extended with a try from winger Paul Sprague, Armstrong adding the extras but in injury time each side scored, home winger Tom Green crossing after a long diagonal run and substitute scrum-half Dave Ember touching down for a try converted by Armstrong.
