Blaydon took the National Three North title overtaking Tynedale late in the season to sneak it by a single point. So after six season of rugby at this level Blaydon move up a division to National Two where they will be playing for the first time.
They actually lost more games than second placed Tynedale but picked up 17 bonus points three more than their nearest challenges. With the kicking duties split between three players winger Andrew Fenby ended the season as leading points and try scorer with 125 from his club record 25 tries. Richard Windle was the leading goal kicker with 113 points.
Tynedale achieved their best ever position in the National Leagues with second place in the table bit will be kicking themselves for missing out on promotion after a late season defeat at Preston knocked them off the top of the table and gave Blaydon the opportunity to move above them with five matches form the end of the season.
In the play off down in Kent at Goldington Dene they were ahead at the break 17-0 but just five minutes into the second half it was all square and Westcombe Park went on to win and gain promotion.
Captain and centre Phil Belgian was the leading points scorer with 183 as he topped the list for the fifth time in six seasons. Full back Will Massey topped the try scoring stakes with 13 and finished as leading try scorer for a third consecutive season.
Preston Grasshoppers finished in third spot some 15 points behind second placed Tynedale but improved three places on the previous season and were in contention till the last half a dozen games of maybe sneaking a play off place. They did not pick up as many try bonus points as the previous season but did pick up five losing bonus point in their eight defeats.
Centre Paul Bailey was the leading try scorer for a fourth consecutive season and has passed the 200 point mark in the last three of them. In the try scoring stakes Full back/wing Oliver Viney topped the list for the fourth time in five seasons and has now racked up 71 tries in 97 matches in the league for Hoppers
Rugby Lions in their first season back in the National Leagues finished a highly creditable fourth in a tough competitive league. They did beat the Champions at Webb Ellis Road 42-31 in the first half of the season.
Centre James Hawken topped the points scoring for the Lions with 266 which also made him top points scorer for the division, 19 clear of Fylde’s John Armstrong.
Winger Ade Hales was the leading try scorer for the club with an impressive 18 which pout him fourth on the list in the division and was a club record for a league campaign.
Fylde finished in fifth place in the division and improved two places on their previous season as they look forward to a fifth successive season in the division. After a good second half of the season they manage to get within two points of fourth placed Rugby Lions. .
Jon Armstrong ended the season with 247 points which was the second highest total in the division 19 behind Rugby Lion’s James Hawken. In his first full season of senior rugby after a brief spell at Orrell.
In the try scoring stakes winger Nick Royle had an amazing season finishing as second highest try scorer across all the National Leagues with an impressive 31 tries in 22 matches and has now scored 47 tries in 40 matches over two seasons since joining the club from Liverpool St Helens. It was the second season running he has finished top of the try scoring charts at the club.
Morley on their return to the National Leagues after a four year absence finished an excellent sixth after a good come back late in the season.
They started the season really well but them went into a slump before recovering and in the end finished 15 points above the relegation zone.
Glenn Boyd led the way in the points scoring with 177 of the clubs 556 points. In the try scoring stakes back row forward Craig Field had an excellent return of 14 tries the second best return in the division by a forward.
Leicester Lions picked up later in the season and in the top half of the table, just in seventh place a point ahead of Darlington Mowden Park.
The Lions were one of the few teams to beat Champions Blaydon when they were 51-36 winners at Westleigh Park.
They were not the highest of points scorers and only three sides scored fewer points than them as they picked up just five four try bonus points all season.
Jon Boden led the way in the points scoring with 92 some where clear of the next on the list. In the try scoring stakes South Seas Islander Feofaaku Lea finished leading try scorer with 12 tries from No 8.
Darlington Mowden Park finished in eighth place a three place improvement on the previous season, a point of a top half place. They actually scored more points than the two sides who finished immediately above them in the league table but conceded points than four of the sides below them in the table.
Leading points scorer before moving on to join North East rivals Blaydon was Anthony Mellalieu with 124, 12 more than winger Michael Breen who took over the kicking duties after he departed.
Half back Lewis Farrar led the way in the try scoring stakes with nine tries over the course of the season as he topped the try scoring list for the first time.
Macclesfield finished in ninth place for the second successive season in their fourth season of National League rugby but for a time were involved in the relegation battle before pulling away to finish six points clear of the drop zone. In their 15 defeats they picked up eight losing bonus points the joint highest total in the division.
Ross Winney finished as top points scorer for the club for the second successive season with 200 points, a 33 point increase on the previous season.
Flanker Richard Jones ended the season as the leading try scorer for the club with nine tries during the season.
Hull Ionians finished in tenth place two places worse than the previous season just three points clear of the relegation zone and will be playing a third successive season of league rugby.
They were not the heaviest of scorers with just 469 points and only the bottom two in the table scored fewer points.
Karl Birch topped the points scoring for the club with 141 points in his first on National League rugby.
In the try scoring stakes winger Gary Stephenson led the way with eight tries two more than anyone else at the club.
West Park St Helens finished 11th to escape relegation back into North One on points difference from Darlington to secure a second season of National League rugby. They both finished up on 53 points and nine wins but West Park had a 64 point advantage over the North East side.
Winger Andrew Soutar led the points scoring with 206 which was the best fourth best return in the division.
Winger Mark Turner was the clubs leading try scorer with 11 tries five more than anyone else.
Darlington finished 12th after four season in National Three North slip back into North One after losing out to West Park St Helens on points difference.
Charlie Rayner led the way in the points scoring with 136 in his first ever season of National League rugby. Veteran No 8 Alan Brown was again the clubs leading try scorer but some way down on his total of 25 the previous season with eight tries.
Cleckheaton after three seasons of National League rugby slip back into North One after finishing 13th in the table. They were 21 points behind third bottom Darlington.
Chris Quinn was the clubs leading points scorer with 78 points which was a long way short of his total the previous season when he scored 162 points.
In the try scoring stakes there was a tie for leading try scorer with both Ryan Duckett, Full back, and John Bentley, winger, going over six times.
Orrell has a dreadful season failing to win a single match and managing just two draws along the way. They conceded nearly 600 points more than any other side and finished 28 points adrift of Cleckheaton and 49 points form safety. They picked up six bonus points along the way, three for scoring four tries or more and three for losing by seven or less. Their leading points scorer was Siyabinga Makhaza with just 65 points. |
