Voluntary position: South West Divisional Organiser, National U17 Competition

Voluntary Role - South West Divisional Organiser - National U17 Competition

The South West of England has the highest Rugby Union percentage participation rate in England (Sport England Active People Survey), however participation rates between the ages of 17 and 18 decrease by 20%.

The Rugby Football Union is focussed on reducing this trend of young players leaving the game. The National Under 17 Competition offers a successful competitive framework targeting this high drop out age group and providing opportunities for club players to continue to play Rugby with their peer group.

We are looking for a skilled volunteer, ideally with experience of competitions organisation, to help deliver this key competition to retain young players in the game in the South West.  The role holder will encourage clubs in Cornwall, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Devon, Dorset & Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Somerset to take part. You will

·        Organise competitions draws for four tiers of competition.

·        Communicate clearly with RFU, Constituent Bodies and Referees societies.

·        Disseminate competition specific information to all participating clubs.

·        Organise neutral venue matches and South West finals day.

·        Resolve regulatory transgressions at Divisional stages.

Enthusiasm coupled with the ability to work successfully with other volunteers, is more important than qualifications.  However, experience of league or cup management, would be an advantage.  Having access to a computer and the internet is essential for the role.  Effectively using good organisation, computer and telephone skills will result in success.

If you have approximately 6-8 hours (maximum) per week during January and March, this role could offer you the chance to create competitive opportunities for young players to keep playing and reduce the number of 16-21 year olds leaving rugby.  You will gain a wide appreciation of grassroots rugby, extending your network across the division, and be part of keeping this Rugby Union stronghold the “best performing region.”

Your predecessor will be on hand throughout the first season of competition to mentor you.  The three other divisional organisers will be available to offer advice.  You will be supported by Billy Clark, Age Grade Competitions Manager and other professional RFU staff.  Needs specific training is available if required. Branded clothing and reasonable out of pocket expenses will be provided.

Closing date for applications is Friday 12th September 2008.

For further information, or to send your letter of application with a copy of your CV, please contact Billy Clark, Age Grade Competitions Manager, Tournaments & Competitions Department, Rugby Football Union, Rugby House, Rugby Road, Twickenham, TW1 1DS or billyclark@rfu.com or 0208 831 6681
