In at the Corner: National One

All the leatest news from National One as the top two pick up maximum points and at the bottom of the table Moseley move out of the relegation zone.

Coventry 22 (Tries: Mitchell, McLean, Brady. Con: Smith 2. Pen: Smith.)

Bedford 25 (Tries: Brown. Con: Pritchard. Pens: Pritchard 5.)

Excellent away win for Bedford who move up to seventh and in the process pass Coventry in the table.

The Bedford scoring machine Jonathan Pritchard kicked them into a 6-0 lead in the first 12 minutes. Coventry then opened their account two minutes later and went 7-6 ahead when flanker Shaun Brady got the games opening try and Luke Smith converted. That was the end of the first half scoring with the home side a point ahead. Straight after the break Coventry took control as they took a 19-6 lead with tries from winger Ally McLean and full back Alan Mitchell.

Pritchard kicked a penalty goal on 50 minutes to get Bedford moving again. A minute later winger Spencer Brown got a try, which Pritchard converted, and they were just three points adrift. Two more Pritchard penalties in the 55th and 59th minutes took them ahead at 22-19. Luke Smith levelled the scores on 69 minutes but the match was settled in the 79th minute when Pritchard kicked his fifth penalty of the afternoon

Otley 27 (Tries: Carroll, Hazelton, Law. Cons: Binns 3. Pens: Binns 2.)

Exeter 29 (Tries: Williams, Kingdon, Shanahan, Hansen. Cons: Yapp 3. Pen: Yapp.)

Exeter sneaked the win at Cross Green as they take all five points with a four-try display.

Otley took the lead in the 11th minute when the ever reliable Simon Binns slotted over a penalty goal. Exeter came back strongly with three tries to lead at half time 19-13. The tries came from wingers Phil Williams and Gary Kingdon and flanker Chris Hansen and Tony Yapp converting two of them.  Otley did get a try when lock Ian Carroll went over and Binns converted as well as kicking another penalty goal.

Otley came back at the visitors and prop Dennis Hazelton got a 56th minute try, which Binns converted to put them 20-1 ahead. Exeter’s recent signing James Shanahan went over in the 65th minute and with Yapp converting and then adding a penalty on 73 minutes they were 29-20 ahead.

Otley did get the last score in the 78th minute when centre Neil Law got his ninth try of the season and with Binns converting to narrow the gap to two points.

Rotherham 55 (Tries: Thirlby, Oliver, Umaga, Cook, Spence, Remnant, Rhodes. Cons: Benson 6, Scully. Pen: Benson. DG: Oliver.)

Plymouth Albion 6 (Pen: Barlow. DG: Barlow.)

Rotherham ran in seven tries all of which were converted as they took all five points on offer to keep their promotion ambitions on target. They had seven different try scorers as they pulled away in the second half after a first half which saw them 13-6 ahead. The only try of the first half came from Neil Spence in the 32nd minute whilst Jon Benson converted it and kicked a penalty goal and Matt Oliver dropped a goal. For Plymouth Tom Barlow kicked a penalty goal and dropped a goal but that was the end of their scoring.

In the second half Rotherham scored three tries in the first 12 minutes to open up a 34-6 lead. They ran in three further tries the first six tries were converted by Jon Benson whilst Dave Scully converted the last try after Benson had left the field. Recent signing Rob Thirlby made it two in two whilst Matthew Rhodes scored a try coming on as a second half replacement to make his debut.

Rugby Lions 18 (Tries: Reid 2. Con: Boden. Pens: Boden 2.)

Moseley 21 (Tries: Wirachowski, Clarke. Con: Nutt. Pens: Nutt 2. DG: Nutt.)

This could turn out to be a massive win for Moseley as they move out of the relegation zone for the first time in months if not for the first time this season as they go above Manchester as they have recorded more wins.

Rugby Lions got the better start and were 7-0 ahead in nine minutes when Philip Reed playing full back this week scored the try and Jon Boden converted. Not long after though Moseley were back in the match when prop Kevin Wirachowski got his first try since joining the club recently. Boden kicked a penalty for Rugby but that was cancelled out when Moseley full back Stephen Nutt kicked one in return. Just after the half hour mark Reed got a second try and Rugby were 15-5 ahead. Before the end of the half though Moseley were ahead when the other prop Alex Clarke scored a try which Nutt converted and then helped then take the lead with a penalty goal in the last minute of the half for 18-15.

Early in the second half Boden levelled the scores with another penalty goal. The match winner came in the 65th minute when Nutt dropped a goal, as the final 15 minutes were scoreless.

Wakefield 6 (Pens: Mee 2.)

Birmingham & Sol 16 (Try: Jordan. Con: Hinton. Pens: Hinton 3.)

Birmingham & Solihull took the points in this one with a good defensive performance to record their fifth away win of the season from 10 matches.

The games only try came on 2 minutes when openside flanker Thomas Jordan got the first score of the match which Leigh Hinton converted for a 7-0 lead. On seven minutes Wakefield were on the scoreboard when Casey Mee kicked a penalty goal. Mee also scored the next points in the match with a second penalty on 33 minutes. Hinton though kicked one for BS two minutes before the break for a 10-6 lead.

In the second half the only scores were two more penalty goal from the boot of Hinton in the 48th and 55th minutes with the last 25 minutes scoreless.

Worcester 35 (Tries: Ezulike 2, Nias, Officer, Pfister. Cons: Brown 5.)

London Welsh 12 (Tries: Starling, Griffiths. Con: Lewis.)

Worcester back in business this week with all five points wrapped up on the hour mark when they ran in their fourth try in the 63rd minute.

The first half was a closely run thing with Worcester going in front in the 4th minute when in form winger Nnamdi Ezulike got the opening try, which James Brown converted. Three minutes later London Welsh were level when openside flanker Lee Startling scored a try and Dafyyd Lewis converted. Worcester re took the lead in the 28th minute when opensdie flanker Richard Nias scored and Brown again converted for the half time score of 14-7.

Three minutes into the second half centre David Officer got the third try and again Brown converted for 21-7. The visitors got a second try on 49 minutes from Richard Griffiths, which went unconverted. Ezulike got his second of the match in the 63rd minute and in the process he took his total to the season to 16 one behind Duncan Roke the clubs leading try scorer. The win was sealed in the 80th minute when replacement back row man Gavin Pfister got on the score sheet and again Brown converted to make it five out of five.

Orrell 32 (Tries: Davies 2, Jones, Haughton. Cons: Jones 3. Pens: Jones 2)

Manchester 25 (Tries: Royle, Pellow, Wilkes. Cons: Verbickas 2. Pens: Verbickas 2.)

Manchester in desperate search of points would probably have settled for one before the game but at the final whistle they would have hoped for two from the draw as Orrell snatched the win in the 80th minute.

Manchester got the better start and after 16 minutes found themselves 12-0 ahead. With tries from prop James Carew after seven minutes and Nick Royle after 16 minutes with Simon Verbickas converting one of them.

Orrell got on the score sheet in the 28th minute when centre Wes Davies scored a try, which Phil Jones failed to convert having already missed an earlier penalty. Manchester then kicked a penalty goal but before the break the home side pulled back three points with a Jones penalty goal.

In the opening 15 minutes of the second half Orrell turned it round to lead 22-15 with two converted tries from winger Simon Haughton and Jones who converted them both. Within two minutes Manchester were level when openside flanker Dave Wilkes scored a try and Verbickas converted. Jones and Verbickas then exchanged penalty goal to see it 25 all after 71 minutes. Then we had the 80th minute drama when Wes Davies completed his double and Jones converted to give Orrell maximum points and leaving Manchester with a single point and thoughts of what might have been.
