In at the Corner - National Two

Check out all the action from the weekend.

Rosslyn Park 44 (Tries: J Justice 2, Ridley 2, Noble 2, Hankey. Cons: Howard 3. Pen: Howard.)

Wharfedale 10 (Try: Dickinson. Con: Pears. Pen: Pears.)

Another much needed win for Park to keep their chances of avoiding the drop back into National Three South alive. At half time though they looked in trouble with the visitors 10-0 ahead. David Pears slotted over a 20th minute penalty goal and then converted a 34th minute try from prop Neil Dickinson to send Wharfedale 10-0 ahead after 40 minutes.

The second half though was a different story with the home side running in seven tries for a comprehensive win. Sam Howard kicked a penalty two minutes into the half and when he converted a try from winger James Justice two minutes later the scores were level.

Park were ahead on 50 minutes when No 8 Ollie Hankey went over for his 10th try of the season. The remaining five tries all came from the back with both centre Martin Ridley and winger Patrick Noble completing doubles. Winger Justice also completed a double and took his total to 14 for the season to take him joint top of the try scorers list. 

 

Newbury 45 (Tries: Holloway 2, McCluggage 2, Lubans, Williams, Radbourne. Cons: Armstrong 2. Pens: Armstrong 2.)

Moseley 7 (Try: Hunt. Con: Thomas.)

This win takes Newbury up to the lofty heights of 8th in the National Two league table with their four win in five matches as they run in seven tries against struggling Moseley.

Right wing Tom Holloway got the home side on their way with a try in the fifth minute, which Mark Armstrong converted for 7-0. 10 minutes later and Holloway completed a double for 12-0 and when No 8 Dave Lubans went over for a try on 20 minutes Newbury were 1-0 ahead and on their way to an important victory. They added a fourth before half time with scrum half Marcus McCluggage going over and after 40 minutes they were 22-0 ahead.

They ran in three further tries in the second half as they went on for a comprehensive as McCluggage completed a double as winger Jason Williams and second row Tom Radbourne went over for tries and Armstrong added eight more points with the boot.

Moseley did manage a consolation try when flanker David Hunt went over for a try, which Oliver Thomas converted. 

 

Doncaster 20 (Try: Briggs. Pens: R Liley 5.)

Bracknell 10 (Try: Ogilvie-Bull. Con: Hallett. Pen: Hallett.)

Five wins out of the last six for Doncaster as they beat Bracknell at Armthorpe as Bracknell slip to a fourth defeat in their last five matches.

Bracknell made the perfect start and centre James Ogilvie Bull went over for a try and Neal Hallett converted for a 7-0 lead. Doncaster were on the scoreboard in the 11th minute when Rob Liley slotted over a penalty goal with his first kick of the afternoon. He added a second on 22 minutes and with his third on 31 minutes the home side led 9-7. Before half time they went further ahead when winger Richard Briggs went over for a 37th minute try and a 14-7 lead.

The second half was restricted to penalty goals with Liley extending the home lead to 17-7 on 50 minutes and eight minutes later Hallett kicking one for the visitors the final penalty went to Liley on 66 minutes. 

 

Nuneaton 22 (Tries: Peacock, Holmes, Gibson, Goodall. Con: Peacock.)

Stourbridge 17 (Tries: Horrobin, J Hall, Sturdy. Con: Hughes.)

Nuneaton stay in touch with the top two after this win over Stourbridge at Liberty Way. It was the visitors though who made the better start and N0 8 Julian Horrobin went over in the second minute to give them a 5-0 lead. They doubled their lead on 26 minutes when winger Jon Hall went over for an unconverted try. Before the break though Nuneaton were right back in it when full back Jody Peacock went over for his 14th try of the season and added the conversion to trail by just three at the break.  

Five minutes into the second half and the home side were ahead when winger Wayne Holmes went over for an unconverted and a 12-10 lead. Hooker Stuart Gibson got the third Nuns try on 67 minutes and the home side were seven points clear. When second row Andy Goodall went over for the fourth Nuneaton try on 75 minutes they were two scores clear.

Stourbridge did have the final try as prop Adam Sturdy went over n injury time and Duncan Hughes converted but it was too late and the home side took two vital points.

 

Harrogate 30 (Tries: Tapster, Taylor, Barker, Visser. Cons: Cholewa 2. Pens: Cholewa 2.)

Rugby Lions 35 (Tries: Mitchell, Handley, Davies, Simkiss. Cons: Rahui 3. Pens: Rahui 3.)

Much needed win for Rugby Lions but they still remain in the relegation zone with Moseley having a better points differential.

It was the home side who were first on the scoreboard when Lee Cholewa slotted over a 2nd minute penalty goal but six minutes later it was all square with Terry Rahui replying for the visitors. Rugby went ahead in the 19th minute when full back Alan Mitchell went over for a try and Rahui added the extras for 10-3 and 12 minutes later made it 13-3 with a second penalty goal.

The home side then got a try on 34 minutes with left wing James Tapster going over for an unconverted try. With the game going into the 40th minute Lions scrum half Toby Handley went over for a try and Rahui converted for a 20-8 lead. Harrogate though were back within a score when second row Peter Taylor went over for an unconverted try and they trailed by seven at the break.

Eight minutes into the second half and the visitors went 12 points clear when prop Matt Davies went over for a try. Harrogate though were back within five points six minutes later when centre Jamie Barker went over for his 13th try of the season and Cholewa converted.

The Lions responded just three minutes later when back row man Eddie Simkiss went over and Rahui added the extras for a 12 point lead.

Harrogate though were right back in it when scrum half Johan Visser went over on 69 minutes and Cholewa converted to trail by five points.

In the final ten minutes Rahui and Cholewa exchanged penalty goals as Rugby took the points.    

 

 

 

Lydney 22 (Tries: Vine. Con: Westall. Pens: Westall 4. DG: Hill.)

Sedgley Park 22 (Tries: Arnold, Glynn, McCormack. Cons: Ueckermann 2. Pen: Ueckermann.)

Lydney turned a good performance to share the points with this draw over top of the table Sedgley Park.

Adam Westall kicked the home side ahead with a penalty goal, which Ryno Ueckermann cancelled out in the 22nd minute.

Lydney went ahead again on the half hour mark with winger Charlie Vine going over and Westall converted for 10-3. Centre Julian Hill made it 13-3 with a drop goal on 35 minutes before the visitors got their opening try of the match. It came from second row Paul Arnold and Ueckermann converted for 13-10. Just before the break Westall kicked another penalty goal to send the home side in 16-10 ahead.

In the second half Park scored tries through left-winger Chris Glynn and replacement scrum half Dave McCormack and Ueckermann converted the last one as Park went 22-16 ahead.

Westall then slotted over penalty goals in the 64th and 68th min to level the scores and earn a point for the home side.   

 

Esher 26 (Tries: Shumba 2, Berrigan, Butterworth. Cons: Wessels 3.)

Nottingham 33 (Tries: Duffey 2, Logan, Lloyd. Cons: Stenhouse 2. Pens: Stenhouse 3.)

Nottingham are back within a point of the leaders after this away win at Esher who were in good form going into the match after three successive wins.

Nottingham won the game in the opening 21 minutes establishing a 17-0 lead. They scored tries through hooker Joe Duffey, 15 minutes, and full back Will Logan, 17 minutes, both were converted by Neil Stenhouse who had earlier slotted over a penalty goal. Esher just managed it onto the scoreboard late in the half with second row James Berrigan crossing the visitor’s line.

Nottingham went further away in the second half with Stenhouse kicking a couple of penalty goals and in between them flanker Richard Lloyd got the third visitors try and they were 28-5 ahead after 54 minutes. 

Esher got a second try just after the hour mark with winger Nyasha Shumba crossing the visitors line and Emile Wessels converting. Duffey then completed his double for Nottingham and they were 21 points clear with 11 minutes remaining.

Esher did manage two more tries in the final 10 minutes with Shumba completing a double and second row Mark Butterworth going over and Wessels converting them both.
