Much needed win for Darlington who move up to 9th place in the table above Macclesfield ending a two match losing run whilst Dudley find themselves four points of a relegation place.
This was the proverbial match of two halves as the home side took control in the opening 40 minutes. After half an hour the home side were 20-0 ahead and seemed well on their way to victory. There were tries for second row Ross MacLachlan and centre Warren Port, both were converted by Michael Swingwood and he also slotted over a couple of penalty goals.
The second half though was a different story with Mark Butler getting them off the mark two minutes in with a penalty goal. No 8 Anthony Lewis got a try three minutes later and with Butler converted they had reduced the DK lead by half. Hooker Rob Goddard got a second Darlington try on 55 minutes and they were within a score of the home side. Butler missed the conversion but added penalties in the 66th and 72nd minutes to put the visitors in front.
They finished of the match with two tries in the closing minutes, which were both converted for an excellent away success.
Macclesfield 20 (Tries: Campbell, Taylor. Cons: Bell. Pens: Bell 2.)
Waterloo 27 (Tries: Smith, Van Deventer. Con: Handley. Pens: Handley 4. DG: Handley.)
Waterloo were given a scare by Macclesfield before coming through to take the points on their march for the National Three South title.
They did though take the lead when No 8 Dan Smith went over in the fourth minute for a try and Anthony Handley added the extras for 7-0. Gary Bell then kicked two penalty goals as Macclesfield got back into the game by the 36th minute.
In the second half Handley kicked a penalty for the visitors for 10-6 but a minute later the home side were ahead. Winger Stephen Campbell went over for a try and Bell added the extras for 13-10. They also got the next score on 62 minutes when hooker Iain Taylor went over and with Bell again converting the home side were 20-10 ahead and a shock seemed on the cards.
Waterloo though want that 100% record and finished the stronger with Handley kicking a 65th minute penalty goal. Three minutes later full back Van Deventer went over and they were within two points. In the final 10 minutes Handley kicked Waterloo to victory with a couple of penalties and a drop goal.
Darlington MP 20 (Tries: Tuhana 2, Foreman. Con: Bedworth. Pen: Bedworth.)
Fylde 15 (Pens: Scott 5.)
Darlington consolidate third place with this win as the two sides just below loss and they are now three points clear in third place.
It was Fylde who were first on the scoreboard as they looked extend their unbeaten run with Mike Scott slotting over penalties in the 4th and 13th minutes.
The home side were on the scoreboard three minutes later when hooker Tasi Tuhana went over for an unconverted try. Scott kicked a couple more penalty goals to give Fylde a 12-5 lead. DMP though were right back in it on 40 minutes when winger Andrew Foreman went over for an unconverted try and they trailed by two at the break.
Early in the second half Scott kicked a fifth penalty goal for a 15-10 lead.
The home side were ahead though on 56 minutes when Tuhana completed a double and Mark Bedworth converted this time for 17-15. Bedworth then added a 64th minute penalty goal, which turned out to be the final score of the match.
Preston Grasshoppers 10 (Tries: Flynn, Steele.)
Halifax 29 (Tries: Bloem, Cooper, Dykes, Afoa-Paterson. Cons: Sanft 3. Pen: Sanft.)
Another nail in the Preston coffin as it is nearly mathematically impossible for them to escape the drop down to Powergen North One for the first time in their history.
Leaders Halifax were ahead in the 4th minute when centre Jamie Bloem went over for a try and Douglas Sanft added the extras. Four minutes later Hoppers were on the scoreboard when winger Russell Flynn went over for a try. Halifax went further ahead with tries in the second quarter from winger Nick Cooper and flanker Steve Dykes and with Sanft converting one of them they went in 19-5 ahead at the break.
Early in the second half Sanft slotted over a penalty goal before the final Halifax try came in the 59th minute from No 8 Robert Afoa-Paterson, his 12th of the season and again Sanft was on target and the visitors were 29-5 ahead. Preston did get the final score of the match when replacement forward Craig Steel went over late in the match.
Tynedale 20 (Try: Wilkinson. Pens: Belgian 4. DG: Belgian.)
New Brighton 16 (Try: Kettle. Con: Birley. Pens: Birley 3.)
Tynedale end a run of three successive defeats with this home success over New Brighton who slip to back to back defeats.
Another match of two halves as the visitors took control in the opening 40 minutes to build up a 16-0 lead. Anthony Birley kicked a fifth minute penalty goal to get the first points on the board. He added a second penalty on 20 minutes and when second row Adam Kettle went over for a 30th minute try he added the conversion. Just before the break Birley added a third penalty goal and New Brighton went in 16-0 ahead.
Tynedale were on the scoreboard seven minutes into the second half with Phil Belgian slotting over a penalty goal. He added two more in three minutes on the hour mark and the home side were back within a score of the visitors.
On 70 minutes right wing Thomas Wilkinson crossed the visitors line and they were within two points on New Brighton.
Tynedale went ahead on 78 minutes when Belgian dropped a goal and two minutes later he sealed the win with another penalty goal.
Kendal 20 (Tries: Mulholland, Harryman, Ladell. Con: Park. Pen: Park.)
Longton 15 (Tries: Sheldon, P Green. Con: A Wheat. Pen: A Wheat.)
Kendal remain seventh after this home success over bottom of the table Longton.
Longton were first on the scoreboard when Anthony Wheat kicked an 8th minute penalty goal. Kendal though were ahead two minutes later when centre Simon Mulholland went over for a try. Chris Park missed the conversion but did manage a penalty before half time to send Kendal in 8-3 ahead.
In the second half it took the home side ten minutes to go further ahead with prop Richard Harryman going over and Park converting for a 15-3 lead.
Flanker Paul Sheldon got Longton back in the game with a 58th minute try which Wheat converted to get back within five points. Kendal went two scores clear on 62 minutes when Luke Ladell went over for a try and a 20-10 lead.
Longton had the final try when centre Paul Green went over for an unconverted try in the 78th minute.
Blaydon 18 (Tries: Kilburn, Keni. Con: Clappison. Pens: Clappison 2.)
Liverpool St Helens 19 (Tries: Cunliffe, Oldham. Pens; Worsley 3.)
Liverpool St Helens keep their chances of avoiding the drop alive with this excellent away win at Blaydon with an injury time winning try.
Centre Peter Kilburn put the home side ahead on five minutes with a try, which Tim Clappison converted for 7-0.
Five minutes later and the visitors were on the scoreboard with winger Dave Cunliffe going over for his 12th try of the season. Simon Worsley missed the conversion but did slot over penalties in the 19th and 25th minutes to go 11-7 ahead. Clappison pulled three points back before half time as LSH went in one point ahead.
Six minutes into the second half Blaydon were back in front with Peti Keni going over for 8th try of the season and a 15-11 lead. Just after the hour Worsley got the visitors back within one with a third penalty goal.
Clappison though took the home side four points clear with a 76th minute penalty goal. Then we had the dramatic end as LSH snatched the win with an injury time try from right wing Stuart Oldham. |
