In at the Corner - Powergen Midlands One

Bedford Athletic 24 (Tries: A Phillips 2, Rudkin 2, C Phillips, Thompson, Bennett. Cons: Tapper 3.)

Walsall 12 (Tries: Marsh, Towe. Con: Wood.)

Bedford Athletic clinched the Powergen Midlands One Championship on Saturday with this success over Walsall and Putnoe Wood.

Bedford’s forwards dominated the opening 28 minutes as the home side built up a 17-0 lead with tries from the back row pair of Ross Thompson and Jamie Rudkin and second row Andrew Phillips, Ashley Tapper added a conversion.

Just before half time the visitors got on the scoreboard with right wing Richard March going over and Matthew Wood converting.

Three more tries in the third quarter saw the home side pull away into a 34-7 lead as both Rudkin and Phillips completed doubles whilst right wing Andrew Bennett broke the forward domination in the try scoring stakes.

Blindside flanker Chris Phillips was the third member of the back row to get on the scoresheet on 71 minutes with the seventh try and Tapper converted.

Walsall did manage a second late on but it was glory for Bedford Athletic who bounced back into the National Leagues at the first attempt. 

 

Broadstreet 24 (Tries: Brown, Roberts. Con: Bond. Pens: Bond 2. DG: Skene.)

Scunthorpe 20 (Tries: Parrott, B Sherwood, Foster, Coult. Cons: Robinson 2. Pens: Robinson 3.)

Two of last seasons relegated sides met on Saturday and it was Scunthorpe who came out on top after a second half recovery.

Broadstreet were first on the scoreboard with fly half Chris Brown going over for a 3rd minute try and with Glen Bond converting they were 7-0 ahead.

Bond added a penalty goal on 17 minutes but three minutes later the visitors were off the mark with a Tim Robinson penalty goal.

Right wing Andrew Skene dropped a goal for the home side and they were 13-3 ahead.

Scunthorpe scored their first try of the afternoon on 29 minutes when scrum half Leon Parratt crossed the home line for an unconverted try.

Broadstreet second row Alan Roberts scored the second home try on 34 minutes bust just three minutes later and Scunthorpe were over the home line again with fly half Ben Sherwood touching down and Robinson added the extras. But a Bond penalty on 40 minutes saw the home side go in 21-15 ahead.

In the second half all the scoring came from the visitors with Robinson kicking an early penalty goal to get them on their way after 43 minutes. This was followed by a try from right wing Tom Foster as they went ahead 23-21.

They went further ahead with a try from centre Michael Coult that was converted by Robinson who slotted over a late penalty goal to seal the win.

 

 

Dunstablians 42 (Tries: Bradshaw 2, Alatini 2, K Morgan, Noels. Cons: Alatini 6.)

Old Laurentians 17 (Tries: Turney 2, Longrigg. Con: Brown.)

Dunstablians had to come back from a 12-7 half time deficit to take the points in this match.  The home side took an early lead with wing Dave Bradshaw going over and Sam Alatini converting for a 7-0 lead. The visitors though were next on the scoreboard to level the match up with winger Charlie Turney going over and Matt Brown converting. By half time they had gone ahead with Turney again scoring to send the visitors in 12-7 up.

The home side though scored three unanswered tries as Alatini started the recovery and further tries followed from Keri Morgan and Jimmy Noels who went over the visitors line, all three tries were converted by Alatini for a 28-12 lead. The visitors though reduced the deficit with No 8 Dave Longrigg going over for an unconverted try.

Late in the game Alatini and Bradshaw completed doubles and again the accurate boot of Alatini converted both of them.

 

Leicester Lions 37 (Tries: Agar, Smith, Dawson, Payne, Griffin, Bailey. Cons: Barendse 2. Pen: Barendse.)

Spalding 5 (Try: Skinner.)

The Lions took an early lead with a try, which Jaco Barendse converted for a 7-0 lead, and not long after it was 12-0 before the visitors managed a score when Matt Skinner was forced over by rest of his pack. By half time though the home side had run in two more scores to pull 24-5 clear.

They extended their lead in the second half with two more tries either side of a penalty from Barendse.  

 

Luctonians 25 (Tries: Panniers 2, Henshaw. Cons: Wheadon 2. Pens: Wheadon 2.)

Kettering 23 (Tries: Coles, Rodger. Con: Whales. Pens: Whales 3.)

Luctonians put paid to any hopes Kettering had of catching Bedford Athletic with a narrow win at Mortimer Park.

Centre Mark Panniers went over in the 8th minute for the games opening try and with Jeremy Wheadon converting the home side were 7-0 ahead. Winger Ryan Henshaw made it 12-0 with the second Luctonians try on 15 minutes.

Two minutes later and the visitors were off the mark with a penalty from Damian Whales. With half time approaching Kettering were right back in it when left wing Luca Rodger went over and Whales converted and a minute later they were ahead with right wing Tom Coles crossing the home line and a 15-12 lead at the break.

Four minutes into the second half it was all square with Wheadon kicking a penalty goal but the lead last just 10 minutes before Whales kicked another penalty for the visitors. 

Luctonians were ahead though on 65 minutes with a second try of the match from centre Pannier and Wheadon converted for a 22-18 lead. This became a seven point lead five minutes later after Wheadon kicked a second penalty goal.

Kettering nearly pulled of a draw with prop Martin Cheatham going over on 78 minutes but Whales could not convert.
