Comprehensive win for Orrell away at Bedford, which makes you wonder how they slipped up at Henley a couple of weeks ago. They out scored Bedford nine tries to one with the boot of Ali Hepher keeping the home side in touch till the final half hour.
Bedford did score the games first try when full back Morne Loxton going over for a try which Ali Hepher converted. Centre Rod Penney though got the visitors off the mark with a try on five minutes and Leigh Hinton converted for a 7 all scoreline. Hepher slotted over a couple of penalty goals to put the home side 13-7 ahead after 18 minutes. .
Orrell then scored two tries in three minutes to take the lead with flanker Ben Lewitt and prop Simon Emms going over and they were 17-13 ahead after 25 minutes. Hepher added another penalty before Leigh Hinton got a try on which he converted before Hepher slotted over a fourth penalty on 39 minutes and Bedford went in five points behind Orrell.
In the second half it was a different story as Orrell took control and ran in five more tries including three in nine minutes around the hour mark and they raced into a 43-22 lead.
Hinton completed a double to go to the top of the try scorer’s list one ahead of Plymouth’s Lee Robinson.
Coventry 34 (Tries: Brocklehurst, Lealamanua, Cannon, Chrystie, Buckingham. Cons: Cull 3. Pen: Cull.)
Manchester 20 (Tries: Wood, Leyden, Viliamu. Con: Verbickas. Pen: Brown.)
Coventry had to win and score four tries to get the full five points and they did that to keep their survival hopes alive.
Coventry were ahead on 12 minutes when centre Simon Brocklehurst went over for a try and Gareth Cull added the extras. Manchester replied with a penalty goal from Stuart Brown on 24 minutes. But two late tries at the end of the first half changed the match as Coventry went 19-3 ahead. The tries came from prop Gas Lealamanua and centre John Cannon with Cull converting one of them.
Four minutes into the second half and Cull added a penalty goal. Manchester did mange to cross the home line in the 54th minute through winger Dave Wood. Coventry though got the fourth try to pick up the bonus point on 63 minutes from scrum half Rob Chrystie and with Cull converting they were 29-8 ahead with the game win and the extra point.
Flanker Mike Buckingham got a fifth try in the 71st minute but Manchester finished with a rally scoring two late tries but the win was Coventry’s.
Exeter Chiefs 21 (Tries: Kelly, Rasmussen, Blythe. Cons: Yapp 3.)
Henley Hawks 15 (Pens: Reeves 5.)
Henley Hawks nearly picked up an away win which would have secured their survival in National One but they will now have to wait till the final day of the season.
Barry Reeves had his kicking boot on and got his first penalty in the second minute to give the Hawks to go 3-0 ahead.
Exeter went ahead on 23 minutes with the games first try from centre Dale Rasmussen and Tony Yapp converted. Reeves then kicked two more penalty goals to go back in front 9-7 after 36 minutes. Just before the break the Chiefs were back in front after full back Diarmuid Kelly went over and Yapp again converted for a 14-9 lead.
Just after the hour mark Reeves kicked a couple more penalty goals to go 15-14 ahead. .
The winning score came in the 79th minute when hooker Sam Blythe went over and Yapp converted. They did pick up a bonus point, which might prove vital in the long run.
Otley 16 (Tries: Binns, Law. Pens: Binns 2.)
London Welsh 9 (Pens: Pugh 3.)
Otley remain fifth after this win over London Welsh at Cross Green. The home side were ahead on five minutes when Simon Binns kicked a penalty goal. He then went over for a try on 11 minutes but could not convert it. Dylan Pugh kicked a penalty for the visitors on 16 minutes and it stayed like that till half time.
In the second half Pugh slotted over a 44th minute penalty goal to get within two of Otley. Four minutes later Binns replied for the home side but just before the hour mark Pugh kicked his third penalty and the Welsh were back within two points.
Otley were given some breathing space on 67 minutes when centre Neil Law but again it was unconverted and they were seven points ahead, which was the way it stayed.
