National Three South runners up Launceston went to National Three North runners up Halifax on Saturday and came away with the win for the right to play in National Two next season after a narrow 18-16 vitory.
Halifax: Tries: Sanft, Blades. Pen: Sanft. DG: Sanft.
Launceston: Tries: Birkett 2. Con: Porter. Pens: Porter 2.
It was a tight game which saw the visitors go ahead on 27 minutes through a Simon Porter penalty goal after the home side had missed two earlier attempts to take the lead through Doug Sanft. Two minutes later though Sanft kicked his third attempt to tie the score. Before the break though Porter put Launceston back in front with a penalty goal for a 6-3 half time lead and still all to play for.
Sanft drew the home side level with a 54th minute penalty goal and then two minutes later went over in the corner for the games opening try and Halifax were 11-6 ahead. The Launceston full back Andy Birkett than changed the match with two tries in quick succession and with Porter converting the first one they went 18-11 ahead on 66 minutes.
With time running out Halifax went over for a try through prop Adam Blades and Sanft had a kick to tie it up as injury time approached, but he was unable to convert and Launceston were two points ahead. Halifax came straight back down the pitch and got in drop goal territory. They set one up but the ball was dropped under the immense pressure and the chances was gone and the Cornish All Blacks took the prize of National Two rugby for next season. |
