In at the Corner - National Three South

Redruth 14 (Try: Pedley. Pens: Brown 3.) 

Barking 16 (Tries: Helmand, Mee. Pens: Montgomery 2.) 

Barking virtually sealed the National Three South Championship with this win at Redruth whom they now lead by 11 points with just four matches left. Redruth were probably thinking they would be slipping own to third with this defeat but Havant pulled of a shock win at North Walsham so they are three points clear of them in third place.     

Bede Brown gave Redruth the lead with an 8th minute penalty goal and before the break left wing Nathan Pedley got a try to send the home side in 8-0 ahead.

In the second half it took the visitors six minutes to get on the scoreboard with Ben Montgomery slotting over a penalty goal. Brown kicked a couple more penalties on 49 and 53 minutes to go 14-3 ahead.

Barking though responded well and just before the hour went over the home line with fly half Ehan Helmand touching down for a try. Seven minutes later they were just a point behind with a second try as left wing Casey Mee went over the home try line for 14-13.

The match changed in the 72nd minute when Redruth’s kicker Bede Brown was sent to the sin bin for foul play and Montgomery slotted over the subsequent penalty goal.

With Brown off the field Redruth were award a couple of penalty goal but with Brown of the pitch the responsibility was passed on and both opportunities were missed and Barking took the win.

    

Reading 32 (Tries: Murphy 2, Wallace 2, Laskey. Cons: Chandler 2.  Pens: Chandler ) 

Westcombe Park 29 (Tries: Hardcastle, Lindfield, Barnett, Tattersall 2. Cons: Barnett 2.) 

Reading remain 8th after this narrow home win over Westcombe Park and are four points of Dings Crusaders in 7th place. Combe picked up a bonus point and are now 12 points clear of third bottom Weston.      

The home side were ahead in the 6th minute when Spike Chandler slotted over a penalty goal. The lead only last two minutes before Combe No 8 Ian Hardcastle went in for the games opening try and Sam Barnett converted. They were 12-3 ahead in the 17th minute when flanker James Lindfield went in for try number two, Barnett missed the conversion but did get the third try s the visitors built up a 17-3 lead.

Late in the half the flanker Wayne Murphy bagged a brace of tries to get Reading right back into the match.

In the opening minute of the second half the recovery was complete with fly half Alex Wallace going in for a try and with Chandler converting they were 20-17 ahead.

Two more tries followed quickly with wing Sam Laskey and Wallace scoring tries to see them move 32-17 ahead. The scoring continued and by the hour mark the visitors had scored two more tries with centre Mark Tattersall bagging a brace and after all that the final quarter was scoreless with Reading taking the win but Combe did pick up two bonus points.    

 

North Walsham 17 (Tries: Rossouw, Malone, Godwin. Con: Borrett.) 

Havant 32 (Tries: Raubenheimer, Claffey, McGovern, Cobbe, L Davenport. Cons: Claffey 2. Pen: Claffey.) 

Barking did North Walsham a favour with a victory at Redruth but they failed to do their bit going down to a home defeat and are now three points behind the Cornish side who picked up a bonus point in the defeat against Barking.      

Havant remain in fifth place with this surprise away success otherwise they would have dropped a couple of places in the table.

Havant went into a 32-0 lead with five unanswered tries in the opening 39 minutes with the backs scoring four of the five tries and Stephen Claffey converting tow of them after giving Havant a 3-0 lead with an early penalty goal.

North Walsham scored two tries in first half injury time to go in 32-10 down and in serious trouble.

In the second half the scoring dried up with the only addition to the scoring a try from North Walsham with flanker Tim Malone who keeps up his excellent recent scoring record.

 

 

Haywards Heath 15 (Tries: Otuhouma, Vander. Con: Ashton. Pen: Ashton.) 

Lydney 77 (Tries: Westall 4, Turoa 2, Macrea 2, Hill, Douglas, Vine. Cons: Westall 11.) 

Lydney consolidated fourth spot with this huge away win at Haywards Heath running in 11 tries.      

This was the Adam Westall show as the re wrote the National Three South points scoring record with 42 points which was one better than the previous record of 41 set by Nat Saumi for Penzance & Newlyn v Met Police.

Westall got the scoring underway in the second minutes with a try which he converted for a 7-0 lead. Owen Ashton kicked a penalty goal for the home side before Westall got try number two in the 16th minute and with the conversion had scored the first 14 points for his side. He went on to score four tries in total and converted all 11 of his sides tries. Lydney were 42 ahead at half time and added another five tries in the second half with winger Andy Macrea and flanker Regan Turoa completing doubles.

 

Tabard 21 (Tries: Sloan, Choppin. Con: Colborne. Pens: Colborne 3.) 

Hertford 36 (Tries: S Manion 2, Brady, R Manion, Barella. Cons: Barella 4. Pen: Barella.) 

This was a must win match for Tabard if they were to have any chance of getting out of their dire position second bottom. Hertford are up to sixth after this win with the bonus point moving them above Dings Crusaders.      

Hertford just had the better of the first half going in 21-13 ahead. Tabard were first to score when centre Luke Sloan went over for a 14th minute try and Rob Colborne converted. The visitors were level on 21 minutes when fly half Sam Manion went over for a try and Neil Barella converted. Five minutes later Colborne kicked Tabard ahead again with a penalty goal. Hertford got a second try when full back Martin Brady crossed the home line on the half hour mark. Colborne kicked another penalty goal for the home side before centre Richard Manion went over for a third try and with Barella again on target bang on half time  

Hertford were out of sight 13 minutes into the second half when they got further tries from Sam Manion and Barella for a 33-13 lead with Barella adding one conversion.

Tabard pulled eight points back with a third Colborne penalty goal and a try form left wing Darren Choppin but it was Barella who got the final score on the match with a penalty goal.

 

Dings Crusaders 24 (Tries: Edward 2, Luck. Cons: Gasson 3. Pen: Gasson ) 

Southend 19 (Tries: Gates, Collier, Lyons. Cons: B Green.) 

Dings return to winning ways with this home success over Southend but drop a place with Hertford picking up a bonus point at Tabard.      

Dings took control in the first half with a three try display and with Waylon Gasson in good form they were 21-0 ahead at the break. Sylvan Edwards playing in the centre bagged a brace of tries whilst No 8 James Luck got the other. 

Southend got on the scoreboard in the opening minute of the second half when full back Like Gates touched down and Ben Green converted. Gasson slotted over a 65th minute penalty goal but it was Southend who got the final two tries of the match in the 68th and 80th minutes. 

 

Weston super Mare 28 (Tries: Williams 2, Burge. Cons: Coleman, Curgenven. Pens: Coleman 3.) 

Old Patesians 44 (Tries: B Parker 2, Pettigrew, Parry, Daws, Mellon, Derrick, Fenley. Cons: Mellon.) 

Big game for both sides but Old Pats took the points running in eight tries for the second week running and are now13 points clear on the relegation zone whilst Weston are 12 points adrift of safety.      

Centre Mark Williams continued his excellent recent form with a try in the third minute to give Weston a 5-0 lead.

Old Pats then took over the scoring with three tries in 12 minutes to go 15-5 ahead as centre Ben Parker bags a brace and No 8 James Pettigrew also touches down.

Neil Coleman slotted over a penalty goal to keep the home side in touch but three tries from Old Pats saw them pull clear at 32-8 after 38 minutes. Coleman added another penalty goal before the break but Old Pats were well in control.

In the second half Weston slowly got back in the match with two tries in tow minutes from David Burge and Williams again, both were converted and Coleman added a penalty goal to get back within four points.

Old Pats sealed the win late in the match with two tries in two minutes late on.
