Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union

Information for Candidates

Introduction

The Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union (L2CCRU) is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and the national source group for Rugby Union, which includes the WRU and SRU.  The qualification is delivered in England and Wales.

The L2CCRU contributes to the provision of the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the Level 2 National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Coaching, Teaching and Instructing (CTI) and the breadth of the Technical Definition for Rugby Union. The NOS for CTI have been developed by people from the industry with a vast range of knowledge and experience. The standards provide a benchmark of good practice.

Outline

The L2CCRU is a vocation qualification that provides candidates with an opportunity to study and be assessed for both the practical and theoretical aspects of coaching rugby union. The knowledge gained will enable candidates to develop an understanding of safe, ethical and effective rugby union coaching. The Certificate qualifies candidates to coach the skills and techniques of the sport of rugby union such as handling, running, kicking, forward play, back play, continuity, unit defence and counter attack.

The L2CCRU contributes to the provision of the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the Level 2 National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Coaching, Teaching and Instructing (CTI) and the breadth of the Technical Definition for Rugby Union. The NOS for CTI have been developed by people from the industry with a vast range of knowledge and experience. The standards provide a benchmark of good practice.

Prerequisites: 

Due to the level of autonomy and responsibility of a qualified coach of rugby union operating at this level, candidates are required to be over 18 years of age before certification. Candidates are encouraged to consider the Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union before applying for the Level 2.

Qualification Structure

Unit 1 -  Rugby Union Coaching Principles and Ethics
Unit 2  -  Plan Rugby Union Coaching Sessions
Unit 3 -  Conduct Rugby Union Coaching Sessions

To qualify for the L2CCRU you must successfully complete all three units.

Assessment 

You are eligible to undertake the internal assessment component of the qualification, which is composed of:

  1. your achievement of the prerequisite
  2. completion of a series of assessed tasks covering all the units of the qualification
  3. observed practical assessment of your coaching of sessions taken from the Practical Syllabus and oral questions on aspects of their performance, underpinning knowledge, understanding and application
  4. an assessment of your practical coaching across the Practical Syllabus of the sport, via a log of coaching and associated session plans and self-evaluations.


If you have successfully completed all the internal assessment components of the qualifications you are eligible to undertake the independent assessment component, which is composed of the observed practical assessment of your  coaching a session taken from the Practical Syllabus and oral questions on aspects of your performance, underpinning knowledge, understanding and application.

Qualification Aim

The aim is to provide candidates who have had an involvement in the game of rugby union with an introduction to the processes and principles of coaching the sport of rugby union to adults and children.

The Certificate offers an opportunity for potential rugby union coaches to be supported in developing the knowledge of how to effectively plan, conduct and evaluate rugby union coaching sessions. This is achieved through an understanding and the application of the underpinning knowledge of the Level 2 National Occupational Standards in Coaching, Teaching and Instructing and the Level 2 Technical Definition and Assessment Specification for Rugby Union.


Qualification Objectives

On successful completion of the L2CCRU, candidates should be able to:

  • develop an appreciation of the ethical coaching process, the needs of the player and related issues in sports science
  • plan, conduct and evaluate a series of rugby union coaching sessions in a systematic and progressive manner
  • coach the basic skills and techniques of rugby union
  • promote and establish positive working relationships and high standards of behaviour with ¡V and among ¡V players, other coaches, parents and officials
  • ensure the health and safety of players and others within the coaching environment and be able to respond to accidents and emergencies
  • develop greater responsibility for their own learning and development
  • promote the sport of rugby union in a positive and constructive manner
  • demonstrate an understanding of the principles of attack and defence through the use of practices and small-sided games.
Fees

Fees for candidates are set by approved centres. You should receive:

  • a structured delivery and assessment programme lasting at least 69 hours, likely spread over a number of days, with a gap for you to collect evidence prior to assessment
  • tuition and support from an RFU or WRU qualified tutor/coach educator
  • registration with 1st4sport Qualifications
  • a candidate pack
  • a variety of learning materials including a Level 2 Certificate Coaching Rugby Union Handbook
  • An L2CCRU Certificate upon successful completion of the qualification

Progression

On achievement of the qualification you might seek paid or unpaid role coaching in a school or Club. You may also wish to attend aspects of the RFU Regional Coach Development programme or the RFU Constituent Body (CB) programme administered by RFU-affiliated county bodies. A similar programme is available via the offices of WRU and their regions.

Holders of this Certificate may also wish to gather further evidence to achieve a Level 2 NVQ in Coaching, Teaching and Instructing Rugby Union. Achievement of an NVQ or individual units of the national standards can only be achieved via an organisation/college approved to offer the NVQ and/or appropriate units.
