Eastern Promise

The success of the season’s U17 regional programme was evident on Sunday (24th April) when at Derby RFC some 300 young players from across the country battled it out for the national title.

There were 11 regional teams competing, from the North East to South West, involving players who since January have taken part in selection trials, training and local tournaments.  And it was clear that the England selectors watching the games would have a hard time choosing players for the U17 Performance Camp in July as the standard of play showed a dramatic improvement, testament to the coaches, managers and helpers involved.

The final between the pool winners North East and East was a hard fought contest, with the East’s one drive over try grounded by prop Veronica Ely (Basildon) in the second half securing victory despite the North East battling to the end.

Third and  fourth place play off saw London & South East (South) in combat with local rivals London & South East (East), the southerners taking it by 7 – 3 thanks to a try from  fly half Fiona Pocock (Petersfield).  The opposition penalty came from Frances Newby (Cranbrook).

The event was organized to perfection by competitions director, Keely Fathers and WRDM for the North Jo Wells, with a team of welfare and medical staff on hand all day and Derby providing great food and facilities.  England Players, Claire Frost, Shannon Baker, Lois Molding, Rachel Burford and Kim Oliver were there during the day  - with Lois, Rachel and Kim all having progressed through the regional programme up to the England squad.
