Herts, East Mids and Middlesex lead the way on Day 1 of Rugby Festival

1 May 2005
HERTFORDSHIRE, East Midlands and Middlesex are making the running after Day 1 of the RSA National Under-15s 10-a-side Festival at Rugby School.

Three wins out of three outings – against Durham (5-0) Hampshire (12-0), and North Midlands (22-5) – have put Herts top of Group 3 and into the Cup for tomorrow’s quarter-final against Middlesex.

Middlesex are also on six points after beating Staffordshire (34-0), Oxfordshire (28-0) and Northumberland (36-7) in Group 4.

Herts team manager Tony Rea said: “We started off very poorly against Hampshire but in the last match against North Midlands we started to play like we can and hopefully we can take things forward into tomorrow. I’m confident that they can put in a half-decent performance when it comes to the knockout.”

East Midlands also cleaned up in Group 6 with wins over Yorks Reds (17-14), Kent Rural (24-17) and Cornwall (32-5) to book a place against Cheshire.

Middlesex manager Ian Taplin said: “We are very happy with our first day performance. The boys are very focused on repeating the achievement of the team two years ago.

“We have two boys playing this year, Mike Simpson and Arthur Ellis, whose brothers (Joe Simpson and Hugo Ellis) played in that team so there is a real determination to follow them.”

Eastern Counties and Leicestershire are also in the mix after collecting five points from a possible 6 to play Buckinghamshire and Lancashire in the last eight.

In the Development Festival, Bristol go into the second day with a 100 per cent record on the back of victories over Newcastle, Shoreditch Sharks, Liverpool and Nottingham City.

Manager Christian Godfrey said: “Tomorrow will be the big test and hopefully the lads will do the business. We started off very well against Newcastle and we knew Liverpool would be our strongest rivals so we were pleased to beat them.”
