3 May 2005 A Bryony Narbeth try and Ceri Large conversion saw the South West North crowned the inaugural Under-14s girls champions at Rugby School today. The extras from Drybrook’s Large secured them a 7-5 final victory over London and South East South and pole position at the Royal & SunAlliance National Festival.
And there was a double celebration for the area with South West South sharing the Plate after a 0-0 final draw with London South West East.
Coach Sophie Bennett, Community Rugby Manager at Gloucester Rugby Club, said: “It was brilliant and the result of a lot of hard work by the girls. It means so much to them to play at this level and at this venue. The way they played today, with their heads up, was great.”
London and South East South coach James Skeens added: “They did really well and I am very proud of them. They had most of the game but they couldn’t cross the line.”
More than two-thirds of the Plate-winning South West South side had not played rugby before this season and the region’s Women’s Rugby Development Manager Katy Storie said: “I’m thrilled to see them come so far in one single season. It’s my job to create and develop the teams for them to come back into.”
