England’s Vickers Crowned Miss World Rugby at Twickers

31st May 2005

England and Richmond’s second row, Rachel Vickers, was crowned Miss World Rugby 2005 on Sunday (5th June) at the final stages of the Emirates Airline London Sevens, part of the IRB Sevens Series at Twickenham. The Miss Rugby World competition was being run in conjunction with the Emirate Airline London Sevens and Walkabout Bars

Rachel, who at the age of 25 has 10 caps for England and plays her club rugby at West London Club Richmond, went head-to-head against Stacey Blanch aged 22 from Swansea. It was truly a showdown between England and Wales.

Commenting on the weekend’s festivities Rachel said:

“Being part of such a momentous weekend, with the Johnson v Jonah Nobock Challenge on the Saturday and the Emirates Airline London Sevens final on the Sunday was tremendous. Having played Scotland here in this year’s Six Nations Championships, it was great to be back in the home of English rugby

Dressed in England Sevens shirts and shorts, the finalists performed press-ups for every England score, as part of the party zone in front of the 22,000 fans. On the pitch, England surrendered their Emirates Airline London Sevens crown to South Africa in a nail-biting final, which saw them lose 12-21. Previously, England had won the London leg of the IRB Sevens in the last two seasons.

Prior to the sevens final Vickers and Blanch were interviewed pitchside, with fans voting for their favourite using either try cards or bang bang sticks. The crowd literally brought the house down in the soon to be demolished South Stand Tetley’s End Zone, in an all-singing, all-dancing carnival. Rachel was crowned Miss World Rugby 2005 and won a pair of tickets to watch England versus Australia in the autumn, as well as a signed Sevens rugby World Cup shirt.
