England Women's under 21's sevens squad celebrated an emphatic victory over Spain in the final of the European Championships in Lunel, France yesterday with a final score of 14-0.
Over the weekend, England scored a massive 178 points and conceded only 7, with notable wins against Portugal (28-0), Belgium (21-0) and Switzerland (54-0) on the Saturday. With Sweden’s surprise win over France, England faced a tenacious Scandinavian side with experience in the international sevens circuit in the semi finals. However, England certainly rose to the challenge, staging a 49-0 try scoring spectacle, which saw them gain confidence leading into the final against Spain on the Sunday.
With Spain unleashing their senior players in desperation to be crowned European Sevens Champions, England knew that they had to establish control and dominance from the whistle. The girls in white, in particular player of the tournament Amy Turner, took the game to the Spaniards, playing fast and expansive rugby, which saw England win 14-0.
Commenting on England retaining their European Sevens title, England Sevens Head Coach Gary Street said:
“I am delighted with the individual and team performances of what is a young and ever improving England side this weekend. It is hoped that by furthering player’s international experience, we are preparing them for potential progression through to the senior level. It is also pleasing to witness the vast progress that other sides such as Sweden are making year on year and holds great promise for the future of women’s rugby in Europe”.
