Melbourne RFC is a small village club based in Derbyshire supporting 2/3 senior teams and a thriving Mini's and junior section including a girls side .We were only formed in the 1973 and as yet have no club house or pitch of our own .We do however have a 4th senior side known as "MUFF's RFC" (Melbourne Under Fifty Fives !) We have only played 2 games in 2 years but train every Monday night winter and summer .We were formed from a group of Dads whose kids had all recently started playing mini rugby .
Some of the dad's wanted to coach but had never played the game , some had played but wanted to practice their coaching on other dads before they let themselves lose on the kids .This resulted in a regular Monday night summer training sessions teaching each other rugby skills , getting fit and finishing off with a game of touch .This has been so successful we know have 27 dads who want to play in our annual game vs the Melbourne 3rd team .Our age range is from 35 to 53 and we will have some players making their rugby debut at 45 !
We now see MUFF's RFC becoming the official Vets side of Melbourne and we plan to play 5 games next year .These will be played on a Sunday directly after mini's training so the young kids can support and have a laugh at their dads . We feel this group has not only benefited the mini's section from improved training and coaching support (many dads have since joined the coaching staff) but we have built some strong links to the senior club as well . It also means I get a pass out for a few beers on a Monday night !
If any one is interested in a game then please let me know by e mail and hopefully we can fix something up
