Dorset & Wilts county match reports U14 and U17

U14 Dorset & Wilts

A sterling performance by the whole squad! Dorset & Wilts played their games back to back and showed good fitness maintaining a high standard of rugby throughout. A nervous start to the first game saw pressure building up on the Dorset & Wilts girls, however their tackling was superb throughout and they settled in to an exciting game. Second row, Frankie Hallet, ran in the first try after 15 minutes. The opposition were pinned back in their own half for the majority of the game, but still managed to break free and score an equaliser. Two more opportunities to score were foiled at the last moment. Emma Winkworth and Amy Shipley came close to tipping the match in Dorset & Wilts favour, but it wasn’t to be.

D&W 5 – Somerset 5

The second game saw the players grow in confidence. Emma Winkworth, Vikki Garrett, Sophie Bishop and Rachel Fox took the game to the opposition with some powerful running. Excellent support play from Kathryn Bloomfield, Ellen Collis and India McCLean saw  Dorset & Wilts push deeper and deeper into the oppositions territory. Two scores in the first half lifted the spirits of the team, but the second half saw some tired girls take to the pitch. Injuries to Ellen Collis and Anna Walton resulted in more replacements being made. Both girls had made a positive contribution to their teams performance. However, Sian Sullivan and Leanne May kept the momentum going. Unfortunately, the draw hadn’t gone in Dorset & Wilts favour and the effect of playing matches back to back was beginning to tell. The final result a 10-5 victory.

D&W 10 – Gloucestershire 5

U17 Dorset & Wilts

The Dorset & Wilts girls swarmed into the oppositions half from kick off. They maintained territorial advantage for the whole of the first half and were eventually rewarded with a well worked try. Good pressure from the forwards saw Gloucestershire turned over on many occasions. Nicola Hoole, 8, and Luci Hooper, 7, forced the opposition to panic by producing tackle after tackle. With positive support play from Sadie Burton, Annabelle White and Laura Carr the forwards were able to set up a good platform for the backs. Alex Cook, 15, and Daisy Garraway, 14, made run after run stretching the oppositions defence in the second half.  Gloucestershire were not given the opportunity to respond.

D&W 7- Gloucestershire 0

The second match was hard fought with Kelsey Johnstone, 10, working hard to organise the backs and producing some good runs through. Again the forwards performed exceptionally well. In both games Dorset & Wilts showed their supremacy in the lineout, winning their own and most of the oppositions ball! An exciting game with both sides showing the determination to succeed. Injuries to Nicola Hoole and Sadie Burton effected the morale of the team, but the replacements worked hard and Dorset & Wilts was soon moving forward again. However, good support play by Somerset saw a try against Dorset & Wilts, and a very narrow defeat.

D&W 3 – Somerset 5
