Girls Rugby Coaching Day Success At Stoop
by Harlequin Ladies
Harlequin Ladies ran a very successful Girls Rugby Coaching Day at the Twickenham Stoop Stadium on Saturday 14 January 2006 writes Mel Antao. It was the most well attended day since the monthly coaching days started almost a year ago. In total, 19 girls between 7 and 16 years of age participated in the session that was coached and assisted by eight Harlequin Ladies 1st XV players.
The players were split into two age groups. The 7 - 10 year olds started off with handling, were introduced to tackling and finished off with a spirited game of Tag Rugby. Whilst the 11-16 year olds concentrated on improving their handling, evasion, decision making and tackling skills.
The standard varied from complete beginners to those girls that have played mini or girls rugby for London Welsh, Cobham, Grasshoppers and Cranleigh. Many of the girls stayed on with their families to enjoy NEC Harlequins put in an outstanding victory against Otley.
Youth Co-ordinater Michelle Kendell said, "It was fantastic to see so many girls present, in particular from the older age group. The day was by far our most successful and well attended. Our ultimate aim is to run an invitational tournament for varying age groups so that coaching day participants can put into practice what they have learnt."
The next Coaching Day will be held on Saturday 18 February 2006 before the NEC Harlequins v Coventry game. Additional dates have also been set for Saturday 11 March 2006 (NEC Harlequins v Earth Titans) and Saturday 22 April 2006 (NEC Harlequins v Bedford)
All coaching day participants will once again have the opportunity to purchase discounted tickets for their families and themselves for the NEC Harlequins matches afterwards. Contact Michelle Kendell on quinsladies@hotmail.com or www.harlequinladies.co.uk to book your place.
