15th January, 2006 - Thanet Wanderers RFC
This was the second year that the Kent Cup included the U14 Girls age group and the standard of play on show was even higher than seen last season.
This year also saw the inclusion of a team from a single club for the first time, and the Beckenham RFC players should be proud of their performances. The other two teams, who competed in the round robin cup format, were:
- N&W Kent Gremlins (a mix of Bexley, Dartfordians, Gravesend,
Medway and Thanet Wanderers clubs)
- S&E Kent (a mix of Cranbrook, Folkestone, Sittingbourne
and Tonbridge Juddians clubs).
These ‘barbarian’ teams were formed, on the day, of players from clubs that could not raise a whole team themselves.
In the first matches Beckenham found the two barbarian sides too strong for them and so the cup was decided by the final, ‘winner takes all’ game between N&W Kent Gremlins and S&E Kent.
There was little to choose between either team in the first half, and it took two late tries from the Gremlins to win the Cup. This was a good display of rugby, particularly considering that over half of the winning team was new to Youth rugby this season.
It was good to see so many new players taking part, which should be a good omen for the future of U14 rugby within Kent.
