U17 GIRLS REGIONAL FIXTURE
SOUTH (15) V. SOUTH EAST (24)
The South hosted games at U14, U17 and senior level at Petersfield RFC on 19th March. The afternoon was dry and clear, but windy, this did play a big part in the way the game unfolded.
The South kicked off and gained an early penalty, but could make nothing of it. Shortly afterwards the S.E. gave their first demonstration of how powerful their pack was releasing their fast winger to run in their first try.
The game continued at a furious pace, the S.E. dominating the scrums and the S. winning the line outs, Emma Goodyear timing her jumps well and disrupting S.E. ball. Excellent driving and ripping from Vicki Cornborough helped to keep the S.E. at bay, but the S. where to slow in support to gain the benefit. Rachel Smith had a couple of good runs aided by Ali Burnett coming up from full back. Rowena Burnfield drove hard towards the S.E. line, released Cornborough who went over only to be held up by the S.E. efficient defence.
Both teams suffered from dropped passes and knock ones, a missed tackle from the S. gave the S.E. wing the space she needed to escape and run in a second try, which was converted.
The S. where finding it very difficult to win ay ball at the scrum and therefore loosing a lot of possession and soon the S.E. scored again. The S. backs were beginning to put some good series of pass together, but tended to throw possession away with a loose pass or a dropped ball. A further try was conceded, then good work from Cornborough and Monteiro carry them over only to be held up once more. The half time score was 0 – 24.
The S. had the wind behind them in the second half; an early penalty was gained by them and much ground gained by a fine kick from Rhianon Edmunds. The support play in the second half was better by the S.
Lizzy Hearn was making lots of ground being one of the players who ran forwards and not sideways, she found her backs with her and the S. made their first score when Montiero touched down.
This was followed by another good push to the S.E. line, their clearing kick was collected by Holly Blenman who scampered back, passed to Edmunds who scored the S. second try
Ali Burnett’s tackling was very effective and Charlotte West was very strong in the centre of the field. Burnfield was always close to the action looking to intercept the ball. The slandered of play from both sides had improved considerably by this stage of the game. There where moments of great defending at both ends of the pitch. In the dieing minutes the S. managed to secure a scrum and Monteiro at no. 8 broke round the blind side to score for the S. This ended a hard fought game the South having come back well in the second half. The final score being 15 – 24 to the South East. |
