South West (south) regional squads for both U14 and U17

Sunday saw the first warm up games for the South West (south) regional squads for both u14 and u17. The regional squads are based around players from the Devon and Cornwall squads and have had four training sessions together at Plymouth Albion since the squads were selected in February. The u14's travelled up to Burnham on Sea for a match against SW(N) who represent Somerst, Dorset and Gloucestershire, while the u17 squad travelled further up the M5/M4 to Slough where they played two games, one against Thames Valley (LSEN) and one also against SW(N).

The u14's got off to a bright start when Jane Westcott picked up a loose ball to charge over with barely a minute played. Carey Wellby got the conversion. The game was very tight and although the home side moved the ball around well and recycled well from rucks and maul the visitor’s tenacious tackling made sure that they didn't make any ground. However the tempo and intensity of the game started to take a toll on the SW(S) fitness and they started to lose their shape in defence and started to give the home side a bit more space than they should of and they were eventually able to work a couple of tries. The Devon and Cornwall girls never gave up though and some quick thinking from Carey Wellby from a penalty saw her go in for a try which she also converted. Last word however went to SW(N) when they scored just on full time to make the final score SW(N) 26 - SW(S) 14. They game had to be delayed in the second half following a neck injury to SW(S) scrum half Kat Connabeer and she had to be taken to hospital for a precautionary check up. The SW(S) award for best forward went to Tavistocks Kirsty McCall who also captained the side, best back was went to Lucy Demaine for her tackling and player of the match went to lock Tamsin Richards who just seemed to be everywhere and involved in everything. Exeter Saracens players Holly Beaven and Florence Stewart both showed up well.

Exeter Saracens was well represented in the u17's games with no less than seven girls taking part. SW(S) beat Thames Valley 12 - 0 with Sarries girls Sara Cox and Charlotte Green both scoring tries with Cox adding a conversion. Unfortunately SW (N) proved too strong in the older age group as well as they ran out winners by 24 - 0.The other girls from Exeter Saracens were Helen Rosewarne, Caitlin Short, Kayleigh Moore, Emily White and Clare Simpson.

The squads have one more training session before their next warm up game at Plymouth Albion on April 9th when they take on the South (LSES) who are based around Surrey. U14 ko 2.30pm followed by the u17's at 3.30pm. Once these games have been played the squad numbers will be reduced in size and the squads take part in a festival involving all the national regions at Rugby School over the last weekend of April.
