South West North (U17) 26 V West Midlands (U17) 5

South West North (U17) 26 V West Midlands (U17) 5

Burnham-on-Sea rugby club provided the venue for South West North U17 to host West Midlands U17 in the second round of regional matches on Sunday 9th April 2006. A strong and determined West Midlands side started well and took the advantage of a nervous South West North team in the early exchanges. Once the ball was released from the set-piece both sets of backs found space, which led to some fast and open play in the opening quarter and eventually led to West Mids crossing the SWN line for the opening score of the match. As the half progressed SWN gradually gained some composure and although the West Mids pack still edged the scrums, the SWN defence showed greater discipline and started to starve the West Mids backs of the space they had enjoyed. After considerable pressure and some sterling defence, SWN finally broke the West Mids line and scored on the stroke of half time, turning round 7–5 up. Within minutes of the kick off of the second half SWN found West Mids napping and went over for their second score. From this early second half score West Midlands didn’t seem to find their game as in the first half and constant pressure being applied and growing confidence by SWN resulted in two more tries for the home side.
