West Midlands look to defend senior women’s regional title against Yorkshire in Moseley final

May 17th, 2006

The Rugby Football Union for Women’s Senior Regional Programme reaches its climax this Sunday with West Midlands going head to head against Yorkshire in the series final at Moseley RFC, kick-off 12pm.

The match, which acts as a pre-cursor to the final of the Women’s Super League series, sees finalists West Midlands, who trail Yorkshire by one point on the league table, go for a second consecutive league title.

West Midlands, who haven’t conceded a defeat in the championships this season, kicked off their campaign with an emphatic victory over the South West at Burnham-on-Sea, scoring five tries and collecting an important bonus point along the way. Their second game was a closer affair, only beating the North East by 12–10 away from home. However, victory at home at Lichfield RUFC on March 19th against the North West saw West Midlands through to the final.

Yorkshire started their campaign away against the East Midlands in February where they won with a superb display of running rugby. They then went on to beat the East Region 25-10 at home with a great come-back in the second-half after initially being 10–0 down at half-time. Finally, they beat the North East at home in the only game where they didn’t earn a bonus point.

Yorkshire will be drawing on players from clubs such as Leo’s, Leeds University and Leeds Metropolitan, while a large contingent of the West Midlands players coming from Lichfield and Camphill.

The Women’s Senior Regional Programme series was introduced for players aged 17 and above who do not qualify for Super League rugby.

Claire Sanderson, the RFUW’s rugby development manager for the Midlands, said: “This programme has provided an opportunity for women to play a decent standard of competitive rugby against teams they don’t normally play against.

“This year we really have had a high standard of players and clubs competing and it has produced a professional standard of games which the players have enjoyed being part of. We are all looking forward to a hard fought match.”
