Teams from across the area participated in a highly competitive but mutually supportive atmosphere. Despite the poor weather some astounding rugby was played, demonstrating how levels of skill have reached an extremely high standard.
In the Under 14 age group the Cup was won by Tynedale, the Plate by Darlington Mowden Park and the Fair Play Trophy was awarded to Bridlington. The Under 17’s Cup was also won by Tynedale, the Plate went to Darlington Mowden Park and the Fair Play Trophy was won by Cockermouth.
Chris Webb, manager of the girls’ teams at Mowden Park organised the event and commented,
“It was a superb event made even better by the Mowden girls winning the Plate in each age group. It was especially pleasing for the captains as our Under 14 captain Leona Gee was celebrating her fourteenth birthday and Ally Cull, captain of the Under 17’s, was playing her last match at home in that particular age group.”
He added, “This is the second year that this event has taken place, both sponsored by Darlington Building Society. It was particularly pleasing that Peter Rowley, chief executive of the Society was able to join us and present the trophies and medals to the winning teams. Peter was joined by two England elite players – Shauna Vetch and Katy McLean, demonstrating the high profile this tournament now enjoys!”
In response Peter Rowley said,
“Darlington Building Society has an excellent record of supporting grass roots sport in the region and girls’ rugby is a sport we are particularly keen to promote. I would like to congratulate all the players for their skill and commitment and I confirm that the Society will once again be sponsoring this first class tournament in 2007”. |
