Thursday 22nd June saw the start of Harlequin Ladies Pre-season training. With the Tour to Stockholm 10s coming up at the end of July, it was nose to the grind stone. The session got off to a good start with 17 people turning up on the balmy summers evening to be tested by our new coach, Gavin Towers. With a small dose of fitness to begin with it was onto some ball skills and then some new basic moves.
Gavin, who refers to himself as a frustrated ex-player, has previously coached Rosslyn Park, Sutton & Epsom and Surrey Under 19 and Under 20 mens teams. He has also coached England U19 Ladies.
Securing a new coach and retaining the core of last seasons squad, means that we now have a very strong and solid base to start building from.
Recruitment and development has also been going well, and we have had new players down to each training session. Hopefully this will continue, as we aim to field a second XV later this season.
1st XV Captain, Kate Sinfield, says, 'My job over the summer, along with the rest of committee, is to ensure that everyone enjoys being a part of HLFC, and to build upon the success that we achieved last season. We want players to develop their individual skills, as well as bond fully as a team. I am very much looking forward to captaining Harlequin Ladies this year, and with the start that we have had, things are looking very promising.'
