Becket Rugby: A successful season

As a school we have had an outstanding rugby season.  Our girl’s team was the first school team to take part in the National Under 17’s competition. The Under 17’ and Under 14’s competed in the Hertfordshire 7’s competition where the two Under 17 teams were medallists and were featured on regional TV and press, as well as the national rugby photo gallery.  Three of the girls were selected for East Midlands regional squads at adult level and Under 17’s, Fiona Currie eventually playing in a representative match the first for Thomas Becket, male or female.  The Under 14 team were runners-up at the emerging schools competition held at Nottingham University, the first trophy won by a Thomas Becket rugby team.  The Under 12 team were also runners-up in the Northants school’s tag competition, although they never lost they were second on tries scored.  Midway through the season we hosted 28 Canadian girls who lodge with team members and their families. This was an experience that enhanced the wider education for our students that will not be forgotten by all those that participated.

The boys have taken part in the emerging schools competition where due to inclement weather it was unfortunate our Under 12’s did not progress, though our Under 13’s did acquit themselves well.  In two age groups our teams were semi-finalists at the Northampton 7’s tournament and were unlucky not to progress to the finals.  The Under 15 and Under 12 team had a most encouraging season and hopes are high that they will develop next season.

Unfortunately we must say goodbye to a number of students who have promoted Becket rugby, Jason, Emmanuel, Matt, Bob, Padraigh, Natalie, Joanne, Sarah, Kathy, Patricia, Danielle C, Kiera, Danielle W, Shannon and any of the outstanding Year 11 students who choose not to return to the Sixth Form.  We wish them all the best for their futures and we hope that they continue to participate in the sport of rugby.

Next season we intend to run 9 teams with boys and girls teams entered into the county cup, regional 7’s tournament and national competitions.  With the acquisition of a grade 3 coach John Cubitt, an ex-Saints fly-half, we hope for further success in the future.  Unfortunately we had aimed to achieve our first trophy in a year’s time and then retire disgracefully.  That time has come early for us but with so many students wanting to go on to greater success – what do you do???

We are looking for sponsors for shirts for next year as we only have one set of match kit to cover all the teams.  We have been grateful for the sponsorship given to us by Kappa Northampton and CHI in enabling us to purchase our present strip.
