As the club season draws to a close I hope you are enjoying the summer. For the RFUW and the England team the season has certainly not slowed down with much time and effort being put in to getting England ready for the Rugby World Cup in Canada, which starts in August. To track the team’s progress, check out rfu.com/women’s rugby for all the latest news or if you fancy coming out to support the team in Edmonton all the details are below.

England Women's Supporters - Rugby World Cup 2006

The RFUW has teamed up with England Rugby Travel, the official travel company for the RFU, for the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Edmonton, Canada. England Rugby Travel is organizing supporter travel packages to the global event that kicks off on August 29th, with the final being held on September 17th 2006. For more information on supporter travel packages for the Women’s Rugby World Cup, visit www.englandrugbytravel.com or call 0870 120 1111.

World Cup Selection

On July 3rd England head coach Geoff Richards named the 26 players who will represent England in this year’s Rugby World Cup. In August the squad will undergo an intense three week training camp prior to leaving England on August 23rd. During these camps, the players will work on individual rugby skills, unit team work interspersed with team building and strength and conditioning. Camp one and three will be at Loughborough University with the team being based at the Royal Marine camp in Lympstone, Exmouth for the middle week. England, who are ranked second, will play the US Eagles on August 31st, before taking on South Africa on September 4th and France on the 8th. The semi-finals, which will be contested by the top four teams in terms of points scored, will take place on the 12th with the final on September 17th. For all the latest news on the Women’s World Cup, check out rfu.com/women’s rugby.

Super League

The RFUW would like to extend their thanks to all clubs for their cooperation in helping this season’s Super League be so successful as we prepare for the Rugby World Cup. Super League has certainly helped our preparations for the tournament and for the clubs we anticipate that the players will be returning to you as much improved all-round athletes.

England Under 19 trials

The England Under 19 trials will be held on Saturday October 7th (venue to be confirmed although likely to be in the Midlands). Although the trials remain open we request that all players wishing to attend are of regional standard. Players must be 16-years-old or over (and under 19-years-old) on or before September 1st 2006. All information and trial forms will be available on the website to download from early to mid August. Forms must be returned to the RFUW by Monday 18th September.

PDA's

The 2006 Performance Development Academies (PDA's) kicked off over the weekend of June 24th & 25th at Nottingham, Guildford and Worcester respectively. Over 120 players attended the sessions. The second PDA weekend takes place over the weekend of July 15th & 16th. Players attending are aiming for selection for the Super 4 trials, the next step towards selection for England representative squads. Super 4 trials will take place on Saturday September 30th, with players then being selected for the Super 4s matches, which will be held in October/November. Impressive displays in the Super 4s in front of England selectors may well lead to selection to the England Elite 44.  Regional Under 14 and Under 17s players also attended June’s PDA’s with over 100 players from each age group participating. Junior players are looking to impress coaches ahead of England Under 19 trials in October and new programmes lined up for next season.
