The Sharks were founded 10 years ago and for the last three years enjoyed the hospitality of Thirsk Rugby Club, playing on their pitch in the middle of the racecourse. However, the time is now opportune for them to move. Head Coach, Tony Corps explains:
We enjoyed our time at Thirsk and are grateful for all the support they gave us. However, if the Sharks are to develop, get back into Premiership 1 and have a second team we need to be attached to a rugby club that has the full range of facilities and a thriving girls’ section that can feed into us. Mowden Park is therefore ideal and we are really excited about joining one of the most successful rugby clubs in the North East.
Graham Sykes, spokesperson for Mowden Park comments:
Having the Sharks at Mowden Park is absolutely tremendous for the Club. The women will complement our successful girls’ section and give them a natural progression route. I believe we are the only Club in the region that has the full range of teams catering for all ages and both sexes. The whole Club, from the chairman to grassroots members, back this move and we are really looking forward to being able to watch top flight women’s rugby at Yiewsley Drive.
The initiative is already paying dividends. When Leos travelled north to play the Sharks they brought their U17 s with them to play Mowden Park’s U17s. This was an excellent opportunity for the girls’ teams, opening up more opportunities and aiding in skills development. The Sharks beat Leos 33 – 5 and Leos U17s beat Mowden 31 - 24
