Victory for Sharks against Rosslyn Park

The Sharks women’s rugby team is now truly settled into their new home at Darlington Mowden Park Rugby Club.  They are firmly embedded into the Club’s structure and have a superb following of fans that turn out in all weathers to vocally

lend their support. Last Sunday was no exception and the Sharks gave a fine performance beating the London team, Rosslyn Park 59 -5.

Scoring for the Sharks was opened after 15 minutes by Georgina Roberts with a fine try under the posts. This was converted by Katy McLean which set the tone for the whole game with the Sharks having the upper edge on Rosslyn Park who, nevertheless, fought valiantly right until the end. Jo Watmore went on to score again for the Sharks and Georgina Roberts ended the first half with another try. With excellent kicking by Katy McLean the half time score was 26 – 0. At this point it appeared that Rosslyn Park might come back but the second half clearly showed the superiority of the Sharks.

After 5 minutes into the second half, a try by Laura Coy, converted by Katy McLean asserted the authority and growing confidence of the Sharks. Further tries from Ashleigh Wright, Jane Chambers, Jo Watmore and Georgina Roberts (who was delighted with her hat trick) followed and, although Rosslyn Park gained a consolation try, they were no match for the well- drilled home side.

It was particularly pleasing for the crowd that the Sharks team featured three players – Ashleigh Wright, Abby Blackburn and Ally Cull - who started their rugby, as girls, with Darlington Mowden Park. Ashleigh is a stalwart of the team, Abby plays when she is home from university and Ally made her debut - to a very warm reception - against Rosslyn Park.
