November 8th, 2006 This year clubs from across Eastern Counties (Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk) have started working together in order to help bring more girls into the game, and to raise standards in a part of the country where there’s no one club fielding a full team. The initiative has paid off with the results on full show at this year's Rochford Hundreds Charity Festival, when two combined teams finished as runners-up in the Under 14s and Under 17s competitions.
“This was an outstanding achievement when you consider that both successful teams were playing together for the very first time, and were up against some squads who knew each other very well indeed,” said Vincent Acheson from Eastern Counties Girls Rugby. At Under 14s a Diss Vixens Team, which included players from Diss, Ely, Swaffham and Beccles, came second to hosts Rochford while in the under 17s competition only a breakaway try separated Sudbury from overall victory. Sudbury's core group were joined by players from Holt and North East Essex Boadiceas, all of whom played crucial roles in the team's success. The one try scored in the final came from Letchworth, who have the largest U17 Squad in East Region.
