1st half :
Playing slightly down the slope in the 1st half; the game started at a fast pace with a number of opportunities for both sides. As the half developed; Hampshire’s aggressive defence enabled them to take control both of possession and field position; resulting in a try for Amy Leyland; and quickly thereafter following a penalty from 10 meters a crash ball try for Emily Wakelin. (Converted kicks both missed). Hampshire continued to exert pressure; and after a forward drive and subsequent flowing backs move brought reward with a try for Lauren Blight under the posts, converted by Jasmine Clarke to take a 17-0 lead.
The game became disjointed for a period as a result of a number of injuries. This enabled Sussex to regroup them selves; with a converted try just prior to the end of the half. The half time score Sussex 7 : 17 Hampshire.
2nd half :
Hampshire made 4 changes at half time to ensure all the squad where able to have an active part in the game. Hampshire now playing up the slop where enforced to make another change due to injury very early in the 2nd half. These changes in conjunction with Sussex starting the 2nd half strongly put Hampshire on the defence for long periods; with Sussex eventually scoring a converted try to make the score Sussex 14 : Hampshire 17.
Hampshire’s aggressive defence eased the pressure being applied by Sussex. With Hampshire moving the ball up the slight slop into the Sussex half. Hampshire retaining the possession over a number of phases, creating space for Jasmine Clarke to make an individual run through the Sussex defence to score under the posts; the kick unfortunately being missed. This importantly increased the Hampshire lead to 14 : 22 ; from which Sussex where unable to come back from, as a result of continued good defence by Hampshire. The Hampshire Girls U14’s ending the match with a winning away start for the 2006/07 county season.
