The Durham team consisted of players from Mowden Park and Westoe whilst the Northumberland squad included girls from Tynedale, Morpeth and Percy Park.
The game was fast and skilful but Durham struggled against a very strong and well drilled Northumberland team coached by Tony Burns. The final score 43 – 7 was indicative of Northumberland’s greater experience and tenacity.
Richard Walton, spokesman for Durham County and Darlington Mowden Park’s U14s coach, commented:
Despite being defeated, it was an excellent experience for the Durham girls and they are to be congratulated for their determination and commitment. They didn’t give up and fought on to the end. A good number of the Durham girls got their first county caps and I am sure that they learned a lot from the game. I am particularly pleased that 10 of the Durham squad came from Mowden Park and would like to formally thank Janet McKay and Cockermouth Rugby Club for organising the day.
The Mowden girls who made up the Durham contingent were: Lauren Ducker, Sarah Turner, Ruth Boldon, Michaela Stephenson-Walsh, Sophie Hinnigan, Emily Trotter, Sophie Craggs, Michelle Leonard,Kathryn Jordan and Leanne Wood. Durham’s only try came from Lauren Ducker and was converted by Rebecca Walker; Rebecca, who plays her club rugby at Westoe, was nominated Durham’s player of the match. |
