Women’s British Colleges XV get their first competitive outing

November 30, 2006

The Women’s British Colleges’ team will get their first competitive outing this Saturday when they take on Wales Development, kick-off 2pm at Bridgewater & Albion RFC.

The team, which is comprised of players aged 16 to 19-years-old, is coached by former England women internationals Susie Appleby and Jenny Lyne, the latter of which played in this year’s IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup before hanging up her rugby boots.

The British Colleges team will also play fixtures against Wales Academy on the weekend of February 3rd and 4th in Cardiff and Wales Students on May 4th when they return to Bridgewater & Albion RFC.

Katy Storie, the RFUW’s rugby development manager for the South West, said: “This is the first time this squad has been established and I’m really excited that this can be supported by the RFUW and utilized as part of our player performance pathway.

“Many of these players are relatively new to the game or are athletes that have transferred from other sports but the standard of coaching are receiving will ensure that they’ll achieve their potential within the game.

“It’s also fantastic that British Colleges Sport have made women’s rugby a priority within their development and performance plans.”

Head Coach Appleby, who has 63 caps, added: “I’m so pleased to be able to work with such a talented bunch of players who have great potential.  Some, I believe, will be pushing their way into England squads in the near future. I’m looking forward to the first fixture on Sunday and seeing all their hard work put into action on the pitch.”

Assistant coach Lyne added: “We’ve had a great training weekend in Bristol last weekend which we packed loads into.  It’s hard that we haven’t had more time with the players but throughout the season we will have further opportunities to work with them.  They are a great group of girls from all over the country and it’s been a pleasure working with them.  Hopefully some of them will follow in mine and Susie’s footsteps and have a chance to represent their country.”
