25 March 2007 Nottingham were crowned Midlands champions of the RFU National Under-17 Cup today after they defeated Moseley in a goal-kicking contest in the regional final at Broadstreet RFC near Coventry.
The sides were level 7-7 at the end of proper time so a kicking contest was used, under IRB rules, to decide the winner.
Alexander Warner of Moseley and Nathan Burton of Nottingham both successfully converted kicks from the 22 metres line and in front of the posts, but Warner was unfortunate to miss when the kick was moved 15 metres in from the left-hand touch. Nottingham's kick proved successful so they will represent the Midlands in the national semi-finals on April 15.
Newark won the Plate competition final by beating Ampthill, national winners in the previous two years, 22-8. Three tries in the last 15 minutes swept Newark to victory with replacement winger Mayowa Oloniua, centre Harry Dunn and fly-half David Fagan scoring.
Josh MacMillan scored Ampthill's try and Charlie Jones landed a penalty. Newark will now play either Percy Park or Otley in the national semi-finals.
Woodrush, who included full-back Zak Small, the son of former England cricketer Gladstone, defeated Wolverhampton 31-11 to win the Midlands final of the Bowl competition.
Old Laurentians will represent the Midlands in the national semi-finals of the Shield despite losing to Paviors in the Midlands semi-finals. Old Laurentians were re-instated because Paviors were unable to take their place in the regional final because they were away on tour. Old Laurentians, from Rugby, took advantage of the reprieve by beating Oundle 15-5.
