The inception of the World Anti-Doping Code and the implications of strict liability now mean that under the RFUs anti-doping regulations a player is held solely responsible for any prohibited substance found in their body.
This includes returning a positive test as a result of using a supplement, even if a player claims to have been unaware of the associated risks of contamination of supplements.
Due to the increasing concern regarding the status of nutritional supplements, ergogenic aids and herbal products the RFU has provided a position statement below to help players understand the risks associated with using such products.
UK Sport have also produced a guide called Supplements and the Associated Risks to help players who may be considering using a supplement to make a truly informed choice. You can download this guide or a summary of its key points below.
