Women’s England A team to face Italy announced

April 29th, 2007

Henley's Rochelle Clark will skipper England A in their second outing in the 2007 European Championships in Madrid on Monday.

After a 62-0, ten try victory against Russia in the opening game of the tournament England A take on Italy A at 2pm BST.

Thirsk fly-half Katy McLean, who made her full England debut in this season’s Grand Slam winning RBS 6 Nations, is vice-captain for the fixture. In all, only three players (Rebecca Essex, Leah Carey and Katherine Merchant), who featured in the Russian victory, will start the second game.

England A head coach Amanda Bennett said: “This game is certainly going to be a step-up from our fixture against Russia on Saturday. Looking at the Italian squad they are fielding several players who actually play first team rugby so they are going to have a lot of experience. This fixture is certainly going to be the biggest game of our pool.

“We have made several changes to the starting line-up and this is because we have to get everyone in the squad some game time as soon as possible. With four games in seven games players need a chance to make their mark, but also have some rest.“
