The Daily Mail Schools Rugby Union Cup competition has been growing in popularity since the Under 15 section was launched in 1988 and the Under 18 Cup followed three years later.

But this year has seen the event reach a new milestone, with over 1,000 teams – 1,064 to be exact - taking part for the first time.

It’s hard to credit that when the Daily Mail Schools Under 18 Cup was first launched in 1991, just 80 teams took part.

This year the necessary documents for the 2007/8 competition have been sent to a record 478 schools and colleges – an increase of 36 on last season, then the best entry ever.

And not only has the Under 18 Cup seen a massive increase in popularity since those first tentative steps.

The Under 15 Cup was the Daily Mail guinea pig when it started in 1988. If only every porker grew at the same pace! This season another significant growth in the Under 15 section has helped to take the total into four figures for the first time.

The growth in the Under 15 entry has meant that the number of Preliminary Round games needed has increased from 29 last season to 80 – an indication of the growing number of schools and youngsters taking up the game and keen to test themselves in a national knockout event.

All of which adds up to another bumper tournament, with schools of all sizes and levels of rugby experience in the mix and ready to set out on a journey that could end at Twickenham on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, when Daily Mail Schools Day will provide the competition with its extra-special finale.

There will inevitably be a note of nostalgia this season in that the name of Castlecroft and the dedicated staff who have handled the tournament for the last couple of decades are no longer involved.

In addition to the administration of the competition moving to Twickenham, the eight semi-finals of the four competitions – Cup and Vase at each age-group – will also have a new home. This will stay in the Midlands, with Broadstreet RFC near Coventry being chosen as the new location for four pairs of game on March 1 and 2 and March 15/16.

Says James Winterbottom, who will take charge of the competition now that the administration has moved to Twickenham: “The forthcoming season will provide another exciting Daily Mail competition at both the Under 18 and Under 15 age groups. Sarah Bailey and myself are looking forward to the start of the action in September and wish all the teams the best of luck.”

Nowhere will the excitement generated by another Daily Mail extravaganza be more keenly felt than in the four camps that emerged with victories last season.

Warwick School won the Under 18 Cup in a final that provided a superb advert for schools rugby, while Ermysted’s Grammar School from Skipton (Under 18 Vase), Lymm High School (Under 15 Cup) and Woodhouse Grove School from Leeds/Bradford (Under 15 Vase) also returned home victorious and doubtless eager for another tilt.
