The contest for third place was also of high quality and commitment, with North East coming out on top with a 24-7 win. Both Northern sides made the long trip to London on Friday night and arrived ready for their local derby.
As with the final, the play-off was a high quality game which saw the North East making the most of their possession and creating opportunities for their backs to run in the tries. Tries came from Katie Wigham, Rose Fong, Hannah Shield and Heidi Swaffield, two of which were converted by Latoya Mason. North West put up a good fight, and scored a well deserved try through centre Claire White, which was converted by Rachel Thomas.
Carol Isherwood, the RFUW’s Director of Rugby enjoyed the rugby on show and was impressed with the quality of the players coming through the player pathway. She said: “This programme really has grown in terms of size and quality. The players involved have a realistic opportunity to be considered for England selection next season, and that is down to the work of our Club Coach Officers on the ground, but ultimately our volunteers.
“I can only encourage more players and volunteers to get involved; it’s not only about winning on the pitch, it’s about personal development, whether that is as a player, coach, manager or physio. Thank you to all involved, we hope to see you again next year.”
The Regional Youth Programme culminates in a Festival on 10th/11th May at Lichfield RFC. For more information, go to www.rfu.com/Women’s Rugby.
