West Midlands retain Regional Trophy

March 18th, 2008

The RFUW Senior Regional Programme reached its conclusion on Saturday 15th March at Staines RFC. The final was between West Midlands and South West, with North East and North West battling for third place.

The final provided a hard fought spectacle with some great phases of play and hard hits to entertain the supporters. West Midlands opened the scoring through second-row Emma Dresser, who finished off a well-worked team try. South West competed well against the strong West Midlands team, but seemed unable to turn their possession into points.

The West Midlands added further tries through Oli Poore, Elizabeth Philip, Ally Taft and Sam Bree. South West benefited from some indiscipline from the West Midlands, with Danielle Poole kicking three penalties but in the end West Midlands triumphed 39-9.

This was the first time that South West has made the final of the Regional Programme and reflects the progress the clubs and counties from the region have made recently. In contrast, the West Midlands celebrated the fourth time of lifting the Regional Trophy.

The contest for third place was also of high quality and commitment, with North East coming out on top with a 24-7 win. Both Northern sides made the long trip to London on Friday night and arrived ready for their local derby.

As with the final, the play-off was a high quality game which saw the North East making the most of their possession and creating opportunities for their backs to run in the tries. Tries came from Katie Wigham, Rose Fong, Hannah Shield and Heidi Swaffield, two of which were converted by Latoya Mason. North West put up a good fight, and scored a well deserved try through centre Claire White, which was converted by Rachel Thomas.

Carol Isherwood, the RFUW’s Director of Rugby enjoyed the rugby on show and was impressed with the quality of the players coming through the player pathway. She said: “This programme really has grown in terms of size and quality. The players involved have a realistic opportunity to be considered for England selection next season, and that is down to the work of our Club Coach Officers on the ground, but ultimately our volunteers.

“I can only encourage more players and volunteers to get involved; it’s not only about winning on the pitch, it’s about personal development, whether that is as a player, coach, manager or physio. Thank you to all involved, we hope to see you again next year.”

The Regional Youth Programme culminates in a Festival on 10th/11th May at Lichfield RFC. For more information, go to www.rfu.com/Women’s Rugby.
