Saracens, Clifton, Darlington MPS, Worcester and London Irish are crowned champions

April 14th, 2008

Saracens Women were celebrating on Sunday at Lichfield RFC after adding the Premiership Cup Final crown to their bulging silverware cabinet this season.

The North London side had already wrapped up the Premiership league in March, their third league crown in three years, by not losing a single game all season but on Sunday they faced their final challenge with a Premiership Cup final clash against Richmond. Two tries from former England international Helen Clayton and a penalty from the boot of Charlie Good secured the 13-0 win over their London rivals.

In the Premiership Shield, where clubs who finished from 5th to 8th in the Premiership this season, Blaydon Team Northumbria took on Clifton. Clifton were runaway champions with a 54-7 victory.

The Championship Cup Final was contested by teams placed top of the Championship North and South leagues. That saw Bath in action against Darlington Mowden Park Sharks, and the latter team triumphed 29-17 with England fly half Katy McLean touching down for two tries and kicking three penalties and a conversion. Darlington Mowden Park Sharks will now take on Worcester to vie for promotion into the Premiership next season.

In the National Under 15s and Under 18s Cups London Irish ran out 29-7 winners against Gloucestershire’s Thornbury RFC and Worcester edged a narrow 17-15 victory against Welwyn/Basford respectively.
