On Friday 18th April Liverpool St.Helens hosted a Tag festival for year 7 girls from local high schools in Knowsley and St.Helens. Students from Edge Hill College have going into schools to coach the girls for a number of weeks specifically for the festival and the students provided a very well organised day for the girls. The morning started with some rugby specific warm ups and training drills and the schools all played at least six games before the day ended. The tournament was won by a strong team from Haydock High School but all those who took part had a very enjoyable experience.
Gill Burns RFUW President was there to present the medals to the players and commented ‘It was an excellent day for more girls to get introduced to our great game. Hopefully some of the girls here today will join up with local club teams in the North West’.
Liverpool St.Helens are hoping to set up a girls section in the near future and the tag tournament has helped them to recruit some keen players. LSH, who used to have a strong women’s section in the early 1990’s, already run a successful mini and junior section but at the moment they have only one girl playing at under 8 level. Olivia Lynan is currently the top try scorer in her age group and she loves the game. Olivia would love to have some female team mates and she has been actively encouraging other girls to sign up for next season. She was a guest at the tag tournament and was awarded a shirt and a medal for all her efforts this season.
