Super League Round 2 wrap-up

May 6th, 2008

The Thunder and Tornadoes teams will clash in the Super League Final on Sunday May 11th at Heythrop Park, kick-off 115pm, after both teams maintained their 100 percent clean sheet at the weekend.

Thunder picked up another good win (19-8) against the Celtic Hurricanes on Sunday but they were made to work hard by a very spirited Celtic team who in the lead up to the game were ravished by injuries and player unavailability.

The game was a very passionate and physical encounter with England internationals Maggie Alphonsi, Jo McGilchrist and Rochelle Clarke in outstanding form. They were ably supported by Karen Jones, Roz Crowley and Ollie Poore and in the backs, Charlotte Boggis ran with strength and power to score a brace of tries.

For the Celtic Hurricanes the Scottish duo of Donna Kennedy and Lindsey Wheeler again played with full commitment to the game. The only try for the Celtics was scored by Hayley Legg, with a penalty converted by Jackie Shiels.

In the Tornadoes versus Stormers clash, the Tornadoes dominated for the first half-hour playing with power and pace. The star of the show was Emily Scarratt who scored six tries in the 53-15 victory. Fly-half Katy McLean ran the game well for the Tornadoes with great support from England players Tamara Taylor and Samantha Dale and England Under 20s’ Sam Bree.

The Stormers came back well in the second-half scoring three tries with England captain Catherine Spencer making several crushing tackles and showing great strength on the ball. Hannah Grant, Emma Layland and Rose Fong all touched down.

The Stormers and the Celtic Hurricanes will now play off for third and fourth place at 12pm on Sunday at Heythrop Park also.

Ends…
