Saturday saw the arrival of the 12 Under 15 squads ready to battle it out in the heat. RFUW Club and Coach Officers were on-site for talent identification purposes and were impressed with the level of skills and commitment on show from all regions.
The pool phase was treated to a number of high scoring games, including South East’s 24-0 win over Yorkshire, and East beating North East by the same score-line. In the Bowl competition, South West South took on the West Midlands, with the West Country side coming out convincing winners with a 15-0 victory. The Plate final was contested by South West North and South East and was a close encounter which was finally won by South East who won 10-5. In the Cup Final, the East Midlands faced the invitational side East Wales. The Welsh contingent had clearly enjoyed their day out and was very excited to be in the final. In a tense match, which saw great commitment both in attack and defence, the East Midlands forced their way to a well-deserved 12-0 victory.
The Fair Play Award was voted for by the referees and pitch marshals for the most sporting team, which was awarded to South West South.
After a successful and sunny Saturday more of the same was enjoyed by the Under 18s age group on Sunday. Again, 12 teams took part in the tournament, with East Wales representing the Welsh region.
Whilst the majority of teams took a game to warm-up, two teams made an impression early on with convincing victories. West Midlands cruised to a 29-0 win over Thames Valley, and East beat the North East 31-0.
In the Bowl Final, North West succumbed to the powerful East Wales team losing 17-0, whilst in the Plate Final, the South ran in a 17-0 win over South West South. The Cup Final pitted West Midlands and Yorkshire against each other, in what was to be an excellent final with ambitious rugby being played by both sides.
The hotly contested match was won by West Midlands 7-0, particularly poignant, as it meant that West Midlands lifted the Mark Edwards Trophy. Mark, who passed away in October 2005 was a key volunteer and devoted coach in the region, and began and developed the rugby careers of many of the Under 18s West Midlands winning squad.
The Fair Play Award was awarded to South West North.
Both finals were refereed by youngster Sara Cox from Devon. Sara has a bright future ahead of her in the game and is being mentored by RFU Referee Development Manager David Rose.
Huge thanks goes to Lichfield RFC, its many volunteers, the Lichfield Referee Academy, the medics, pitch marshals and the regional programme volunteers for making the programme a success.
