The England Women’s 7s squad to compete in Sunday’s (June 1st) Home Nations Cup at Murrayfield, Edinburgh, has today been announced.
England head into the tournament on the back of victory in the Amsterdam 7s, and a win against the New Zealand Aotearoa Maori team in the London Emirates Airline 7s. In both tournaments England defeated New Zealand, a team who had been unbeaten for nine years until this month.
England Head Coach Simon Amor has named a strong squad of 12 players for the Home Nations 7s, which will run alongside the IRB World 7s Series at Murrayfield.
Wasps’ Sue Day is captain once again and she will be leading a squad that also sees a first 7s call-up for Saracens’ Victoria Massarella, Richmond’s Amy Turner and Worcester’s Katherine Merchant. The three newcomers to the squad were all involved in England’s XV aside European Championship triumph in Amsterdam last weekend.
Amor said: “At the start of our 7s training programme we had a squad of 18 people and Vicky, Kat and Amy were in that squad. They were involved in England’s European Championship campaign recently, but now they are available I am pleased to name them in this squad. They all have done a great job for England this season.”
England will play Wales and Scotland twice on Sunday for the Home Nations 7s crown, two teams England are yet to play this season in 7s rugby.
Amor added: “Scotland and Wales both have good international teams in the XV aside game and I am sure their 7s teams will be equally strong. We are looking forward to taking on our Home Nations rivals.
“For us personally, we are looking forward to building on the success we have tasted in Amsterdam and London but we know we are by no means the finished article. The squad have still got a lot to learn and the players are excited by that.”
